It is still not ceratin that the Varyag is going to enter PLAN service in any state, alot of people have got very carried away becouse of th ships new paint job but if you look carefully there is no indication of any sort of military equipment, aircraft handling equipment, and evidence for chinese carrier aircraft is scant. It is not even confirmed whether or not the ship has engines.
Im not saying that the Varyag wont enter PLAN service just that if she does its a very long way of.

Just looking at the gorgeous stealthiness of the JASSM brings back one of my pet annoyances-why oh why do they not just fit the raptor with the EOT’s and DASS (from the F-35), to the Raptor-just imagine a Raptor carrying 4 JASSM’s!!!

From the UK point of view the best thing that could happen is if the US cancelled the A version, this would probably be enough to get the RAF to go with the C version along with the Navy and would keep joint force harrier/jsf alive.

There needs to be a massive sweetner for which ever country the US gets to build them (the chinese have managed very successfully thus far to put other countries of selling them) or the US is going to have to cover alot of R&D and design costs (when was the last time the US built a dielsel-electric sub?)
Not to mention the fact that Taiwan is a captive market-who else has been selling them arms recently? even the french have stopped.

When I first saw the pic in the last post it reminded me almost instantly of the Pakistani Babur cruise missile. But the very similar truck in the background shows what definately appears to be a drone of some sort, so as yet I think it is to early to be sure.

Combat aircraft have a shorter range and can carry less weapons-loss of capability.
Carriers cant carrier Hawkeye-loss of capability.

Steve, you are using the rather weak argument of a slight increase in sorty rate, and the ability to carry a negligible number of extra aircraft to make up for the massive loss in capability a STOLV carrier has in comparison to a CTOL carrier-it simply dosnt work.

From everything i have read and heard about this weapon it sounds very capable, but with everything with the UK defence procurement it is running late.

whats the point in making a UCAV that can take of from anywhere if it dosnt have to becouse its endurance enables it to hit all the targets it needs to operating from conventiional established airbases?

Becouse the vast majoruty of UCAV’s are desighned to be able to conduct long endurance operations anyway.

As I said before a STOVL UCAV would be pointless and expensive, a special airframe would have to be desighned to accomodate the F-35B’s engine along with new flight control systems. Not to mention the fact that a STOVL UCAV is realy uncharted territory. And all for one customer who will likely only order limited numbers becouse they should have built their carrier with catapults in the first place.

The idea that STOLV increases sortie rates for carriers is again an area which is more myth than reality, STOLV aircraft wiil alomst always take-off conventionaly taking the same time and space as a CTOL aircraft. Landings require a large area of the deck to be cleared if they are to be vertical and the aircraft still needs to be moved, ultimately the limiting factor on sorty rate is likely to be refuel and rearming times.

Why would training a CTOL pilot be more expensive than training a VSTOL pilot? we could probably get very good terms for putting UK pilots on the US training programme.
Devleloping a STOLV UCAV would cost hundreds of millions if not billions and for what?-to equip two carriers which should have had catapults in the first place?
The flight control system for the CTOL version will be very easy to use and pilot friendly to.
I am pretty sure that the Italian AEW merlins have already been rejected by the UK.
