I have several things to say to the previous post, TSR-2, the original supersonic harrier (for which prototype engines were built), the V-bombers (must notably Vulcan and Victor Mk2s), Fairy Rotodyne, Bristol Belfast transport plane (bigger than the Hercules), Westland Westminster helicopter, Rolls Royce Olympus engines (powered the concorde) aswell as various other examples, not to mention the knowlednge and research done to produce these desighns.
The fact that they didnt get very far are more of an indication of britains economic and political situation following 6 years of near total war and the adoption of the keynesianist economic model post war which was part of a general lean to the left up til Magaret Thatchers coming to power.
Surely Indias mig 29km are based on the M airframe!!!???!!! They are probably the best Mig 29 variant to date, it would be nice if the Indian worked with the Russians to develop the Thrust vectoring engines of the Proposed Mig 29 OVT.
As for comparisons with F16blk52, its probably to close to call, something that would come down to luck and pilot skill, things I doubt are lacking from either the Indian or pakistani airforces.
what are Norways submarine plans now that the Viking programme is dead?
I think the Sub launched vairant is practically a different missile, highly secretive, and not capable of being air launched, If you google Israeli weapons, you find a brilliant website by that name with all the info you could want.
It will likely in the not too distant future be,
1) KDX 3, truly awesome ship
2) The japanese Kongo and
3)follow on Kongo 2 or whatever you want to call them
4)052C or whatever comes out of china next after the 051C’s chances are we wont have to wait long to find out!!!
5)Bangalore class (project 15a) impressive all rounders.
We didnt discuss the propulsion, but apparently the T-45 uses the WR-21 gas turbine, its got some sort of special feature to increase efficiency but I forgwt what it is?
But the T-45 has been selected and is under construction thus it just slipped within the requirement os the discussion, the Meko and the Trimaran desighns look good but as yet are only concepts.
Is that last Image of the Lafayette firing the Mica rea or a PS job? If so which boat is it and how many Mica does it varry? I thought the Lafayettes were going to get 16 Astor 15s? That would make more sense considering that they already hace crotale?
Its a more modern missile, I have heard rumours that the malaysian navy is looking at an improved version of its leiku with VL mika instead of seawolf, and the romanian navy replaced sea wolf with mica.
The t-23s could easily be reffitted with VL Mica and if they got the new sonar, they would make for very capable ships.
I suppose that It was only a matter of time before what many believe to be the next world super-power started to spread its military capabilities
These ships were taken out of service under the latest defence review, they were to be mothballed, I would be surprised if these ships were sold in the near future, and if they were I would be very surprised if they found there way to pakistan.
where are the other Type 22s now? I know that 1 went to chile, 2 to romania and 4 to brazil, there are also four still in service with the RN, so where are the other 3? or have I miss counted?
why? she was an old boat, that did not fit with the others in the fleet, such a modification would have been ridiculously expensive, especially as the vessel does not seem to have been built with expansion in mind. By the early 80s, the RN was in the early stages of looking for a replacement for its anti air warfare ships and the Bristol probably would have been the first to go. The propulsion was not realy strange, you have to understand that Bristol is a much earlier desighn than the T-42s or the the other ships that you can regard as her peers, thus at the time of her desighn, the propulsion was not that strange.
go to http://www.navyphotos.co.uk there are some large and amazing photos of this very powerfull ship there. If you google search type 82 or HMS bristol, you will find alot of information.
She was a success but she was very expensive to build, and she used the old style steam turbines, which made her less efficient than the newer type 42s, and being only a single unit there was little in the way of standardisation. She was probably the most powerfull british surface warship, excluding the aircraft carriers of the cold war, and only with the arrival of the T-45, will the RN exceed the prowess of HMS bristol.
She was actually modernised, her original radars were replaced and she recieved the same radar fit as the newer type 42s.
I am not entirely sure how long she served but it was for quite some time, having been built in the sixties, she was present at the falklands, im pretty sure she was active as a destroyer until the early nineties. Currently HMS bristol has all her armament removed and she is tied up and stationery as a tarining ship, if you take a tour of portsmouth harbour by boat you get some amazing views of her, but she looks a sorry state.
What made Bristol so powerfull, was her armament, she was intended to escort the CVA01 carriers (which were cancelled, and therefore so were the planned three sisters to hms bristol) therefore in this role it was believed that the ship did not need an embarked helo. Her armament consisted of 1 twin arm sea dart missile launcher with forty rounds (in comparison to about 22 on the type 42s) and 1 Ikara asw missile launcher with 36 rounds (in comparison to about 4 rounds on other ships with the system)
