Thank you Jonesey.;) One of the things that amuses me is that if you got back to the CGI’s/artists impressions of the FFGX from the early nineties you will find a striking similarity to how the current LCS designs look!

So thats three Neustrashimy’s, quite an improvement for the Russian fleet when it happens.
Had time to think about that whole LCS business in the fitness center. Came up with the notion, that the aviation complex (hangar, flight deck, &c) should also be treated as a “mission package”, and not be part of the permanent installation.
Reasoning: Could LCS actually replace Zumwalt? If the 155mm gun of the Zumwalt is put in place of the flightdeck? Plus – my pet idea! – MLRS/ATACMS for extended range amphib fire support could also be put there on the aft-deck.
Maybe not so absurd! Two dozen amphib-fire-support LCS instead of just two to six or so Zumwalts. Operationally preferable, financially anyway. Question is, could the ship take it? Is a 3500ts vessel stable enough as firing platform?That would make LCS basically a supersized crew boat. But very flexible.

You dont realise quite how close to reality you are with that, although from a doctrinal perspective rather than equipment wise. DDG1000 evolved out of the original DDX project as an uber cool star destroyer for killing Tom Clancy style terrorists and rogue dictators, fire power as the order of the day. Then post 9/11 reality set in and it became apparent that a maritime force with absolute naval supremacy needs to be able to do allot more than just blow things up whilst looking awesome. Thus LCS was born, an altogether more utilitarian ship, less firepower but more maritime usefulness. Essentialy they are both intended to interact with the land but in very different ways.
One of Scooters above posts is very revealing as to why it has all gone very very wrong. Very large tracts of the USN have no comprehension of anything other than blue water ops. So instead of procuring a Littoral Combat Ship they ordered a high-spec Frigate with the ability to operate in the Littorals. LCS actually is an OHP replacement.
It all depends on how great the gap is between the minimum effective range of Aster-30 and the maximum effective engagement range of Mica VL against a likely threat, taking into account detection range and reaction time. In short, it’s time the Europeans started firing multiple MA-31 supersonic targets directly at PAAMS/SAAM equipped vessels under realistic conditions.

The interesting thing, for me, off the Greek proposal is the seeming absence of conventional CIWS.
Either that means:
a) not only a complete loss of faith in the rapid-fire 20-30mm systems, but, a lack of belief in the new mid-calibre programmable/guided munitions
OR
b)VL MICA (probably backed by first-class softkill – emitter arrays to port and starboard of the mainmast?) has proven to be highly reliable and highly effective against AShM-representative targets. For a system that, owing to a limited guidance refresh window, not all that much was expected of that would be quite a result.
Apart from that the design looks hideously compromised to me. Whats it supposed to be?. 16 Aster30 do not maketh much of an AAW ship as has been correctly pointed out. 16 SCALP-N is equivalent to the striking power of a tactical fighter sqdn or two which might sound something, but, the Greeks already have (memory serving) air-launched SCALP, tactical fighter squadrons to employ them and most importantly targets for them mostly within tactical strike fighter range. The need to embark a few more aboard surface vessels who’s LACM reload/reattack cycle will be measured in days, against hours for the fighters, eludes me completely.
Especially so when those silo’s could be productively filled with more Aster30’s and the ship could have a significant land-attack capacity off the 5″ OTO gun and the shore-attack mode on the MM40s.
Marketing: ‘look its multi-role and can fire cruise missiles’ the same was done a few years back with Mark41, even though no one has got Tomahawks.;)
The lack of CIWS is interesting and personally I would be more interested in a dedicated sea control variation with the AESA EMPAR supposedly being worked on for the Italian navy and the 76mm oto with the new ammunition. Oh and all 32 cells with ASTER-30.
Essentially I agree with your compromise comment but I suspect it is a marketing ploy. It could be also be an indication of how tight for space the ship is, otherwise why only 16 A70 cells instead of 32? and why no CIWS?
Size & weight (especially top weight) also matter. You can fit in far more A35s & Micas than you can A43s & Aster 15s. Or fit A50/Aster 30, supplemented by A35/Mica (possibly CAMM later) for leakers, giving you more missiles overall and LR AAW.
I agree, I like this configuration. A mix of Aster-30 and Mica seems like a good combo for the AAW mission. In that scenario is the Aster-15 really required? I would be interested to know how the French and Italian Horizons VLS cells are loaded out as there are rumors that T45 will only get Aster-30?

are you sure about the Dokdo radar fit I thought it was sparce and quite cheaply fit out. This next bits from memory but I think they had to borrow some kit from USMC to bring it up to standard
Well it is fitted with the Thales SMART-L.
Directed fire Broncho old boy!. Putting the amphib on the beach and stationary opens it up to a whole raft of threat weapons that a ship standing 10nm offshore isnt exposed to.
Put it this way – you’ve had your air component sweep across and hit all sorts of fixed targets to prepare the landing beach. You call in your amphibs to put MBT’s onshore. While this is happening the two spec ops lads in a covert OP monitoring your landing beach get on the radio and 20kms inland 3 Smerch launch vehicles roll out of their covered positions and fire 36 rockets in salvo. With the LPD you’ve probably lost the armour and maybe, if unlucky, the LCU’s. With the LST odds on you lose the ship, its crew and everything therein.
10nm offshore doesnt sound much and certainly is no defence against advanced AShM shore batteries and radar-directed long-range coastal artillery. It does however offer much, much better protection against less-advanced threat systems that the beached LST most definitely IS vulnerable to.
As usual I just want to remark upon the excellent postings of Swerve, Jonesey and Fedaykin. The above piece of myth busting being quoted as an exceptional example. Just to add my two pence, it is worth noting that everybody is moving away from LST’s in one way or another. Furthermore you would not even need a Smerch to mess up an LST’s day. A fast firing 120mm mortar or even a few AT missiles will have the potential to make life very complicated indeed.
On the wider issue of turkey and future procurement, it seems like a classic case that a real foreign policy/money driven defence review is needed to determine exactly what Turkeys armed forces are expected to do. An LPD may not be that unsuitable depending on what your ambitions are, if your foreign policy objectives are limited to disaster relief and only intervention in failed states very little escort of any sort is required, take the proposed South African LPD procurement as an example.
The Dokdo may well be a good option, however one of the best ways to make it cheaper would be to remove some of the luxuries like the V/STOL preperations and impressive CMS/radar outfit.
I’m sure they’re marketing this to Israel’s needs as it is basically what Israel wants (but substitute some of the weapons and electronics with Israeli ones).

Not only Israel, LCS is about the right size to help US shipyards/defence contractors break into the lucrative export frigate market that is largely dominated by European yards at the moment. It will be a tough nut to crack and I remain sceptical but stranger things have happened.
Correction – they did believe Iraq was in breach of several UN resolutions which included, among other things, the fact that the country had not fulfilled all its obligations with respect to disclosing the scope of its WMD programme and that verification of the project’s destruction was incomplete. However this is NOT the same as believing WMD stockpiles actually still existed – just expressing dissatisfaction with Iraq’s progress in proving that all such stocks and infrastructure had really been destroyed.
I think it is safe to say that UN security Council approval for military action would not have been a problem if those countries had genuinely believed Iraq still possessed WMDs. While it was acknowledged that conclusive proof of the complete destruction of Iraqi WMDs was lacking, the reverse was also true: Powell’s presentation utterly failed to convince the above mentioned governments of the continued existence of any stockpiles – which led to military action being dismissed.
Since this discussion is moving off-topic I won’t be commenting on the Iraqi case anymore in this thread. Anyone who feels the need to continue may send me a PM.

More or less every country with any intelligence interest genuinely believed that Iraq had WMD, to the extent that the French went so far as to declare that If Iraq used them during any conflict with the US France would become involved. This is not a subjective matter for debate but one of fact, you are wrong.
It makes perfect sense, Sean. How the hell they thought that they could get away with it beggars belief! I bet that there was some serious throwing of toys in the corner from the Syrian/North Korean team after they lost the building? There must be some worried members of the Syrian government wondering if the NKs will come clean about the project?
All that money and effort wasted and they also had to clean up the site! I wonder if the Syrians have gone to the expense of deploying AAA/SAMs around the new building just in case?

Fairly simple, like Sean says in his blog, it was tucked up out of the way with not that much to draw attention to it. Add to that that Syria may not have reckoned on Israel actually attacking it. Sure they have done it before but that was a very long time ago. They may have been expecting something more akin to the diplomatic saga that North Korea has been through rather than an air strike. Indeed that may explain the secrecy from the west, rather than giving this any credence just take it out without fuss, that way no concessions have to be made and no tin pot dictators have to given undue credibility.
What if it was a North Korean replacement for the Yongbyon reactor…

Makes perfect sense and to be honest is what I have been thinking for a while. A reactor in Syria makes perfect sense for both Syria and North Korea. Look at the concessions that NK has extracted in return for disposing of its nuclear program, and look at Syria’s position. Theoretically you could see them doing an NK and negotiating for security promises and possibly even the return of the Golan. The harsh reality is that this strike itself shows how absolutely feeble Syria’s security situation is, put it into the context of Israel having invaded what used to be Syria’s backyard (Lebanon) and it is easy to see where such concerns could come from.
For North Korea it gives them a facility where they can continue Nuclear research and even production just outside North Korea thus giving NK a double victory in the six party talks. Indeed one can even see a potential narrative for this, following the likely failure of both their Nuclear test and the Taepodong-2 delivery system the NK deterrent looked extremely weak so a negotiation at that time would have made sense to achieve temporary security. However the fundamentals remain, paranoia, isolation and weakness. These are the factors that initially drove NK’s nuclear program and they remain. A Nuclear weapon is a far better promise of security than a paper promise not to attack so it makes perfect sense to try and continue the project covertly.
Have any of you considered the possibility that it has some AShMs but that these are launched from the torpedo tubes (they look like 533mm heavyweight DP tubes, not the 324mm ASW tubes, and so should be able to handle Klub-S variants)? :diablo:
