Not strictly aviation, but has anybody tried the revised “Wingco Joe’s” cafe yet?
Did Ray Hanna ever stop display flying? I rest my case.
Speaking recently to the instructor who does my 2-yearly PPL check ride and he’d just done the same for a well known 92 year old Jodel driver who lives hereabouts. Apparently he flew very well and recently passed his Class 2 medical. Mind you he won’t be doing aeros in an Extra any time soon but your comment about 63 being old is just plain (plane?) rubbish.
I foresee the “naughty field” and the M11 giving Duxford pause for thought during the airshows.
I think what is wrong about the CAA’s statenment is that the AAIB haven’t produced their report on Shoreham as yet.
Cirrus Aviation is the holding company for Classic Wings.
Are you sure TFC have 4 Sea Furies? There’s the 2-seater that flies and the single-seater that doesn’t. Are there two more in store? I believe the Beaufighter is stymied for lack of engines and hasn’t progressed for ages coupled with the fact that Stephen Grey allegedly would not be cleared to fly it. No reflection on his skills of course but more a licensing issue. I haven’t seen the Spitfire for a long time so I guess it’s in store.
Thanks Duxman. That just leaves G-BAFO. ZPD was registered on 7/3/72 and BAFO on 19/10/72 but both were cancelled on the same date of 10/10/73 for return to NZ. So following on from Thunderbird’s thoughts that it would seem a bit unlikely that they would be shipped to the UK, only to return to NZ, is in part disproved by the photos of ZPD. So did BAFO ever turn up at Gloucester? They were both only ever registered to GlosAir so presumably they never found a customer in the UK.
I think I’m going to have to ask Ralph Vincent, who assembled most of the Airtourers at Gloucester, if he remembers what happened with G-BAFO.
Many thanks chaps, the coffees are on me next time I see you at Duxford. On that subject what’s the coffee like in the “new” cafe? The picture of ZPD obviously confirms that it was airworthy in the UK and what a nostalgic line-up it was passing. Still at least the two heavies are still around. Both ZPD and BAFO ended up in Bangladesh and Chittagong is a long way to go to check on BAFO’s background. Any help in that direction would be welcome.
Following up on your note of the 11th February, and with the head cold gone, I chugged up to Nottingham yesterday and can confirm that their AVGAS is still £1.38 per litre including VAT. They seemed to be very keen to have the lowest price in the area which is a refreshing change from the norm. Coupled with an excellent cheese and ham toastie and good visibility it made for a grand day out Grommit.
Without starting the argument again but does anybody have the relative costs of an American engine versus the Centaurus? Or is it just the knowledge of the two types.
Let’s hope so but I fear the new CAA fees may militate against a much larger show. We’ll see.
Doesn’t that apply to the Duxford stuff as well?
I agree. It seems to be mainly Duxford based aircraft which is, of course, no bad thing but presumably they are less expensive than bringing in outside “acts”. Perhaps this is a sign of things to come with the CAA’s swingeing increases in their fees. I’m still waiting to hear from my MP as to whether he’s had a word with the Minister in charge about these increases.
