I’ve just had a look at my car racing reference book for Pebsham and it appears that there was a proposal for a 3 mile Grand Prix (!) circuit and a 2 mile Club circuit. Apparently permission wasn’t granted and as you say the proposal just faded away.

The “other” Blackpool airfield, Stanley Park, is now a zoo. Was that the one?

One shot has always puzzled me. Towards the end when they are waiting for the aircraft to return, all the groundcrew are looking one way and the bombers appear from behind them! I know American navigation is allegedly not very good but I can’t imagine it’s 180 degrees out.

Good call Capt Chaos. I live 12 miles West of Duxford and at 1040 local the cloudbase is still around 1000 feet with wispy cloud below that. Horizontal viz is 10k plus but I certainly wouldn’t be flying yet, although it is brightening from the West.

Great pictures and a tremendous effort by the TFC engineers. When I saw it on Monday I wouldn’t have thought it possible. Well done all round.

There was a Bleriot being assembled in Hangar 2 yesterday (the Swedish one?) but in my uninformed view, it will take a superhuman effort to get WG 655, the Sea Fury, airworthy. I hope I’m wrong.

    Johnny,
As you probably know there’s an Astra cinema at Duxford. They show films there occasionally and it’s run by some real enthusiasts who I believe are based at the IWM at Lambeth. You might try them as they probably have access to the IWM archives. Good luck.

Just to emphasise the difficulty of keeping these aircraft in the air, bear in mind that the BBMF Lancaster has “gone tech” a couple of times this year and I would imagine they have more resources than the Sally B operation. Good luck to both of them says I.

That’s good news. I saw it at Biggin on Monday when I flew in to collect an aircraft. All the covers were on as it had gone “tech” at the show over the weekend.

Thank you FarlamAirframes. At last a sensible answer to my original post. Just a footnote on G-INFO, it was interesting the use of the word “suspended” against the permit/C of A for G=GLAD. EASA have just “suspended” the C of A of all European registered Eclipse exec jets. N-registered aren’t affected yet. If I’m correct the CAA used to “withdraw” or “cancel” a permit or C 0f A. So perhaps “suspended” is EASA-speak for something different. G-INFO also had the C of A renewal on my aircraft 2 days after I got the paperwork so I think it is fairly current.

So, 26 posts and nobody has come up with a list. I have been before and even worked there on a couple of occasions and of course have enjoyed it. However that was partly why I wanted a list to see if it was going to be significantly different from previous years as I have several other things I could do that weekend. I have to say that I thought last year’s lacked some of the spectacle of previous years and with no Tigercat leading the Balbo it just wasn’t the same. So what would make me go? Well the Vimy, Demon, any Sea Furies that are legal and airworthy and of course the Vulcan. (Well there were F-15s last year). I really don’t see why it has to be a secret.
    I’ll get my coat.

Where’s Feather * 3 when you need him? He flies one of the two airworthy Australian airframes and loves it to bits.

I flew Cambridge-Manchester two or three times with Suckling and after one fairly hairy X-wind landing in Manchester the hostie, (I think it was Sue off the programme) rushed up to the front with a picture of a daffodil. When I asked her what it was all about she told me that they gave the captain the picture with the comment “You planted it, now you can grow it!”. You don’t get that sort of fun on BA. And the food was excellent and no nonsense with those ‘orrible little bottles of wine. No, the lovely Sue would bring round the whole bottle and keep you topped up. Not that you could drink too much in the 35 minutes it took form Manchester to Cambridge but we did try!. I had heard that Roy Sucking had died and I was rather surprised that the BBC didn’t mention it after the programme finished. The second programme was made in 2006 and he died in early 2008 I believe.

I was fortunate to meet Ken when we were both working in Kenya. A charming man and full of stories, both about aviation and personalities. He also had a slight stutter in normal speech but when I later went flying with him that vanished completely when he was on the radio. They don’t make ’em like that anymore.
