Are they accepting fly-in visitors and if so do you have a contact number? Thanks.

Give air traffic a quick call on 01223-833376. They should have the latest timetable.

Scotavia, the markings on the red and blue Islander were described by the commentator as the Brigade of Guards house colours, which may of course be the pre-war colours chosen for the Kings Flight. It could also be a drop plane for one of the Army parachute teams?

Speaking to one of my contacts at Duxford yesterday and he told me that their first complaint was from a lady he knows in Duxford village….and she is deaf!! Must be something to do with the frequency of the noise I suppose. Anyway if it floats your boat they’re at it again next Wednesday as well.

I know of a certain Spitfire for which the annual insurance premium is alleged to be £35,000. If it does 35 hours a year, which is a little on the high side, that’s £1,000 per hour before fuel, maintenanace and paperwork.

When I was working in Kenya many moons ago, there was a story that a certain East African Airways captain (who is still around, so I won’t name him) was taking delivery of what I think was the last VC-10 to be built. In the spirit of little lads asking a Ferrari driver “What’ll she do”, aforesaid captain, with the reluctant agreement of the BAC test crew, proceded to find out. The rumour was that a suspicious noise was heard along the South Coast and an indicated Mach No nudging up to 1.00. Always good for a discussion over a Tusker in the East African Aero Club bar.

Anybody seen the AIC which says AFIS is on 130.675 and ATIS is on 118.9. The briefing sheet gives Info on 118.9 Any idea what time the “airshow” will be on as I could be a bit tight on my slot?

Oi…where’s my Airtourer? It was good to meet you and I hope the trip back to Rochdale wasn’t too onerous. It was a grand day out Gromit!

Thanks for all the replies chaps, it’s just the kind of stuff I was looking for. If you could pursue your ex-CFI Thunderbird, I’d be most grateful and it might bring some more stuff to light. With regard to a couple of the criticisms on the type there are a few comments I’d like to make. With regard to the fuel tank, Alan Wood is the guru on all things Airtourer, as he was chief engineer for Victa in their heyday, and has been the “man” since the Airtourer Co-op took over design authority for the type. Anyway he has engineered an approved long range tank which sits behind the seats and gives another 90 minutes range. The 115 has about 3.5 hours safe endurance without it, which is as much as my bladder will stand.
The Airtourer over Scarborough would probably have been G-AZOE, which is based up near Newcastle.
As for looking weird, well beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I concede that it is a bit dumpy. However that may be due to not having an unecessary swept fin along with all the Pipers and Cessnas that just aped the airliners of the day. The early Cessna 150s have the straight fin and that causes the same effect.
The South African one is interesting and must be a rebuild of one of the two originally registered there. Do you know the former reg?
Keep it coming chaps, there’s always room for more

I’ve just looked up the AM article and it says ” The Satyr came off worse and was not insured at the time of the accident. Because of this it was not acknowledged by LLoyds and consequently it’s subsequent history is shrouded in conjecture”. Not that this helps a great deal but it might explain why there is still doubt about the subsequent history even though the article was written 32 years ago.

There was a T21 hanging up in the roof at Little Gransden last year. The gliding site not the airfield.

The Americans do the same thing with their classic cars and over-restore them to a finish that would be just too expensive on a production model, even a Ferrari or Bentley. My personal view is that the patina on the OFMC Spitfire MH434 is absolutely right as it looks as though it is in regular front line service.
