It was still there in March this year. I’m sure other members will have later updates.
Just got back from Duxford where I thought I’d check on the number of awards that the AAM has won. I think they are being modest but there are at least 7 plaques commemorating various awards which I don’t think an “ugly” building would have won. I defy even Setter to deny that the sight of the AAM in the early dusk, when the lights are just coming on, not to be impressed by the view of the U2 in silhouette when coming North on the M11.
As for being the AAM being dark you are quite wrong…period.
A question has to be raised about who it was designed for. Was it for the family who might have visited Wimpole Hall, or Cambridge or Linton Zoo? Or was it for the enthusiast? It would be interesting to know how many of Duxford’s 400,000 visitors are true enthusiasts and how many are day-trippers. A ratio of about 20 to 1 I would guess. Certainly the hundreds of guests I’ve shown round seem to think that the IWM has got it about right but then they are in the “day-visitor” category who also are the majority.
Good post JDK, nice to have something meaty rather than the width of a squadron marking to think about.
Hang on, haven’t the Canadians got one that is ground-running and may well have flown by now?
Wasn’t it the designation of the Student i.e. Miles M100 Student? One of the early “fixed” registrations.
My apologies. I’m working at Duxford otherwise I’d be there with the Airtourer. Have fun it’s a good event.
Thanks Mark V. It looks good. I saw the YAK practising this morning and it looked terrific against a very blue sky. However I hear it’s going to blow a bit tonight, then rain tomorrow. Let’s hope it clears before the weekend.
As a UK Airtourer owner I went to the AGM at Wangaratta a couple of years ago. When I organised the UK AGM we went to Sywell and it took me all of 30 minutes flying. I was amazed when one of the Ozzie owners told me it had taken him 3 DAYS to get from Perth at 90 kts. And that, I think, could be a problem for your show. The sheer size of the country means that wherever you have it somebody is going to be using a lot of avgas and precious hours on the airframe. Still at least there’s a good resto shop at Wangaratta.
Wasn’t the talk, at the time of it’s departure from Duxford, that it was going to the Bianchis for restoration for Kermit Weeks?
Hi Steph. I was lucky enough to get an invite to the Aviators Lounge at the Red Bull race and it was fantastic. Quite how the CAA allowed the 10 entrants to hurtle round the course at about 20 feet through the gates was a real surprise. There was a crowd of 60,000 and I think it’s moved the UK airshow scene on a couple of notches. They need to review how tickets are made available, they had 500,000 in Hungary so that says they need a different site for next time. For a first time at the venue it was a great success.
It isn’t. Try 2006. See previous threads.
Same source now quoting 18 Spitfires and 6 Hurricanes. One of the Griffon-engined Spitfires has gone “tech” and won’t be ready till October/November. Still sounds like a good show though.
On the subject of multiple Cessna 150s, the Coventry Aero Club (?)put up a 5-ship Cessna formation at Old Buckenham a couple of years ago. Their line-abreast formation was a real surprise and something quite different. Would fit well at the “country-fair” feel of the Sywell show.
I went with our car-club last year and the members were fully intending to come this year. They’re a fairly hard-nosed lot but they were all very impressed by the variety of aircraft on display, so you’re certainly getting that right with the non-aviation enthusiast. Like others have said the mix seemed spot on. The only comment on timing is that the date was fairly close to that other excellent event at Little Gransden which might dilute both your attendances?
Interesting stuff paul. Are the Catalinas the ex-Greenpeace and Plane Sailing aircraft?
To get back to the original enquiry, I overheard somebody who should know, say they were aiming for 19 Spitfires and 6 Hurricanes. That should make for a good show I would think?
