Great – thanks 🙂
I think the Bormann mystery was put to bed not so long ago with a DNA test.
A wing on it’s own is unstable in pitch.
Let’s say at a certain angle of attack you balance it with the C.G. in the same place as the centre of lift – it balances so no tailplane required. But if you increase the angle of attack, the centre of pressure (lift) moves forward which then creates an out of balance moment which tends to pitch the wing up MORE. The reverse happens for decreasing angle of attack – the centre of pressure moves back tending to pitch the wing further down. The tailplane is there in part to provide a large corrective moment and prevent this effect.
Yeah – superb angles ! 😀
My understanding is that the choice of which 2 engines to shut down is dictated by which 2 engines have hydraulic pumps attached. Most Viscounts (all but the very first versions) have their pumps on the inner engines and thus shut down the outer ones for taxiing. Presumably the Vanguard has it’s pumps on the outer engines.
Cheers lbaspotter 😀
LOL.
Just to be a bit pedantic about the title… I’m reasonably confident it wasn’t the dead passenger that was trying to board the aircraft himself, but rather the anxious relatives that were trying to board HIM. 😀 I might be wrong though . :p
I’m a paedophobe
I give small children sweets to go away
Moggy
LOL – so you’re “grooming” them (giving them sweets) to “manipulate” them (make them go away):D:o:
Welcome to today’s PC society in all it’s glory.
If it’s not Boeing I ain’t going.
Shouldn’t that be:
“The latest Boeing – ain’t going” ?
It’s a theory they’ve been working on for many years – but have yet to come up with any definite proof although there is some anicdotal evidence. It’s not their first trip to Nikumaroro, they’ve been quite a few times and brought back various artifacts – but no ‘smoking gun’ as of yet.
I think it was ‘an orchestrated litany of lies’, as Mr Justice Mahon said.
Next time I’m back in the old country, I’ll ask a few people who were around at the time what they think. I do remember a general suspicion that ANZ was telling porkies in the aftermath, though.
Peter Mahon wrote a book about the affair before he died, I think. I’ll try to find out what it was called and let you all know. It will make interesting reading.
I agree totally.
Mahon’s report was a well investigated and balanced report and he clearly pinpoints all the true causal factors of the accident.
The main reason for all the controversy I think was his complete lack of ‘pulling punches’ to the establishment – which included the Government as a major Air NZ shareholder. e.g his infamous “orchestrated litany of lies” statement.
I highly recommend the docu-drama “Erebus – The Aftermath” with Frank Finlay as Justice Peter Mahon.
Be interested to know what the majority of New Zealander’s view on the causes – especially after 30 years to reflect.
Would they generally go with Chippendale or Mahon – or perhaps opinions are very divided?
Google Earth shows two of the old hangers just to the NW of the M62 Jn 8 roundabout. The old curved peri-track/taxiway curves west away from them and the ghost of the old NW-SE runway is visible. This is somewhat to the west of Goldcliff Close though.
……….he promised it would be aeronautically good with correct period aircraft. However, he said he couldn’t provide too many details.
Mmmm – wonder what they’re using for Earhart’s L10E Electra that she disappeared in. As far as I know there’s only one other L10E extant and that’s a long term restoration project that isn’t airworthy. I think there are a couple of L10A’s airworthy including the one Linda Finch recreated Earhart’s round the world trip in……
Just so long as they don’t use a Beech 18 :eek::(
The surprise is that it wasn’t
