It looks like the Comet is staying , I just got a reply from the new General Manager – will post it here as soon as I have time (tonight )
Great idea , East Fortune is too near the Edinburgh flight paths to be any good for opening as a GA and warbird facility , although I would leave the Museum as it is as it’s a pretty good museum .
Opening a new Museum at Prestwick is a great idea , there is plenty room down there , there are a lot of airframe and propulsion engineers working down there and I would bet there would be a few of them who would volunteer for engineering support of the Museum . It’s also very accessible . I wonder if the RAF Museum would loan some of their stored airframes and perhaps they could persuade the Dundonald chaps to move to Prestwick as they have a superb collection of airframes and they are well mantained ( well worth a visit !!) Maybe the guys from Carlisle would move too ?? .
But it will never happen anyway ( unless the lottery people would part with some cash !!!) but we can dream on anyway
🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

Well…the IWM’s Director of Collections is leaving the Museum this week to take up a new position with the Museums of Scotland as their Director of Collections…at her leaving do yesterday I mentioned the Comet to her, and said I would be keeping an eye on what happens to it 🙂 So I will try and keep in contact with her and see what lies ahead for the Comet…Ashley
Thanks Ashley that is a bit of good news for a change , what is her name ??? , me and some of the other Scottish enthusiasts ( Uncle Keith , Merlin and hopefully Der ) are going to try to reschedule our meet-up at East Fortune , this was cancelled as the builders were still working on the place, it would be nice to see you and some of the other FF regulars up here , we even have two Spitfires within polishing range of each other . I will look through the airshow schedule then post a poll so people can vote which weekend to use. Many thanks .

Hmmmmmmmmm, interesting Alastair, and more than a bit worrying. If one part of the Museum doesn’t know what the otehr half is doing there’s sure to be problems afoot. ::rolleyes:
My sentiments exactly Ant , I thought this would all change for the better when Dawn left but it I fear not .
Good photo’s Kabir , especially the Marut , do you have any other photo’s of her and is there any web pages with the history of the Marut . If anybody can help could they post them to my job’s Email address

Thanks in advance .
Bull5hit , That’s the chap (Bob ) that I spoke to on Saturday the 19th and he told my father-in-law and I that the decision had been made to scrap the Comet but the Vulcan was staying, he told us that both airframes had been surveyed and the Comet was definately being chopped up and the Vulcan restoration work was being put out to tender with a view to preserving her for the future , Grant Newman was on-site too but I never got a chance to speak to him after talking to Mr Leyden , I will be back there this Saturday to have a chat with Mr Leyden.
The main reason I spoke to Mr Leyden was that I mentioned we were supposed to be having a meet-up with Keith Mac and Steve Young etc last weekend , Mr Leyden was a bit miffed that it wasn’t in his diary as Mr Crompton hadn’t told him , the weekend ended up being cancelled as the classroom at EF is still full of builders rubbish . If this is going to be another clash of personalities then the future for the MoF looks bleak .
Come back Adam PLEASE.
I’ve been following this thread for a while now and the most impressive thing is that everybody has their say in an informative , interesting manner and not once has it degenerated into the usual slanging matches and general abuse , are we getting wiser with old age ?????

I certainly care SOC , keep posting them !!! , thanks
Great photo SOC , any more of the same beast ??
Does anybody have any photos of the Javelin they could post , I think that they look excellent and wish I was old enough to have seen one fly.Thanks.
There is an ex-pat who worked on XM605 for a while getting the 115V systems working so the cockpit lighting , and other bits and bobs working , however due to Museum policy he is no longer allowed to do so , at no time was she considered for use as a test platform , NASA have access to a multitude of test airframes , they wouldn’t consider reviving an airframe they have no spares for , no experience of flying her etc , the rumour was just that I’m afraid , just a rumour.
This is definately no rumour , I spoke to the weekend supervisor chap last Saturday and he was adamant that the Comet would be reduced to a cockpit section because of corrosion but the Vulcan would be repaired as necessary and would be conserved . After being told this I had a good look round both the Comet and the Vulcan and I couldn’t see any major corrosion on the pair , I’m no structures expert but they both look in good nick. Both airframes are now roped off so you can’t get under them but the Comet was open and the heaters and dehumidifiers were running too , Grant Newman was on-site but I didn’t have the chance to speak to him after I had looked round the Comet , Grant is very approachable and knowledgable, it would be interesting to ask him about his thoughts on the Comet . The rest of the Museum is looking good and the restoration hangar tour is excellent – would the Comet fit in there ???? , the supervisor ( I didn’t get his name ) mentioned that it would cost £150,000 to get the Vulcan undercover .
If the rumours are true about the Museum applying for a Concorde , how will they treat her – same as the Comet – stick her outside for 20 years then scrap her for no apparent reason !!!.
The Comet is the only one left in Scotland and she looks great in her DanAir colours – I for one will be Emailing everybody and anybody to try to make sure she isn’t scrapped , if enough of us can make our voices heard maybe we can save her.
The ex-Dan Air Comet at East Fortune will be scrapped fairly soon , only the cockpit will be retained as an exhibit , I was round here on Saturday and she looks in good shape , no signs of major corrosion , 2 heaters inside her and 2 dehumidifiers – I wonder what the reasoning is behind scrapping her , as the last Comet in Scotland an effort should be made to retain her.
