    A plane hopefully ? (lol) :dev2: :diablo: 😎 😀 😉

I probably won’t know till the next day , the good lady has volunteered to drive to ‘Weegieland ( Hubcaps in the boot naturally ) as I’m stuck behind this PC until 2300 on Weds night , I intend to go home with a massive cargo and be comfortably numb before she arises for the drive . 😉 😀

I’m in Bothwell and can pick up Edinburgh most nights , esp around 23:00 – 12 movements in an hour or so – although the local Plod are worth listening to as well !!!.

My eldest son ( Jamie aged 6) is helping me with his first model – an Ilyushin Il-28 Beagle ( made by some Czech company ) and a Sherman tank v PAK 40 diorama . He seems quite eager although the lounge carpet and sofa are looking decidedly paintstained now !!.

    My dad has always been into bikes so I got the bug early – YamahaTY80 , TY175 ( both are in my Avatar ) , 2 Ossa 250s , an Ossa 350 , 2 Kawasaki KX250s , on the road Kawasaki ZZR600 , Kawa ZZR1000 , Yamaha YZF 750R , Yamaha YZF750SP , Ducati 900SS ( crashed – still own it ) ,Ducati 888 ( still own it ) , 4 Honda VFR 400s ( all smashed ) , Suzuki GSXR750 SRAD , Yamaha R1 ( long term loan – smashed) , Honda VFR800 , and many others which didn’t last long – Yamaha V-Max springs to mind , ouch .
Trackdays , I have an ex-Supersports CBR600 which is reasonably well known ( I will refrain to name drop ) and an Aprilia RS250 . Anybody who fancies arranging a meet at one of Jamie Whits Trackdaze ??? .

aha! have heard of coffman, just have to work out how that works now (helps if I know how to spell it :))

I assume the output of the cartridge spins a small turbine which is geared up to turn the crankshaft via a clutch of some sort?

No clutch , it just spins the motor over , ignition on and the motor runs !!

I’ve tried googling for without success to answer a question that came up in conversation.

I undestand that most DHC1 Chipmunks have now been converted to electric start. So what was used for the original starting method? cartridge? if so how did that work?

Coffman starter , usually in a magazine of 6 , really just a shell without the warhead , BANG and the outrush of hot gases spin the engine over fast enough for it to start . Canberras use the same system – thats what the bullet shaped protrusion is on the engine intake .
