    RE: Ryanair vs GermanWings

Also, Hapag Lloyd Express (owned by TUI) is offering a £12.99 fare including taxes from Luton to Cologne/Bonn:

    Hi,

Many thanks for the info … VERY interesting.

What I can’t understand is WHY the flights stop at the beginning of August, right in the middle of holiday season ? Weird…

    >It is a short series of flights and I believe it is a LGW
    >based A330. The aircraft will position to Glasgow to fly
    >direct to Holguin.
    >(LGW/P-GLA-HOG-GLA/P-LGW).

So the flight from Gatwick won’t be via Glasgow, but will instead be direct ?

    >Varadero airport is now closed to International traffic, so
    >no more charters will fly there, but the Cubans have opened
    >up Cayo Coco (CCC) as an alternative to Varadero (VRA).

This is the strangest (& most informative bit) of your post. I booked a holiday to Cuba last night, with First Choice flying Monarch LGW->HOG. (Glasgow would have been ideal, but I’m not flying until 27 Aug). The errata screen warns that there is a stop in Varadero for embark/dismebark, then onto Holguin (& then back to Gatwick). So that’s NOT what’s happening, then, if Varadero is shut ?

And if you’re going on holiday to Varadero, which is the complete opposite end of Cuba from Cayo Coco, you’re surely facing a nightmare. I understand that that journey by road is not easily undertaken, thus raising the possibility of an internal transfer flight on one of the infamous Cuban/Russian Antonov’s … ye gods!

Oh, how happy am I that we are staying at a resort in the Holguin area (Guardalavaca) 🙂

Since you work for Monarch, I have no doubt that your information is correct, but I researched our holiday pretty thoroughly before booking, and this is the first time that I’ve heard of Varedero being closed to charters.

Thanks a lot for posting , it’s really appreciated. I’m going to try & find out a bit more about this , will post if I find anything.

    Hi,

Thanks for that info – any idea of seats ? (3-3-3 or 2-5-2 maybe ?)

    Hi,

Yeah, I read that too. Apparently it is only from June to 1st August (not much to me unfortaunetly, since we aren’t flying until end of August).

    I asked in Thomas Cook (travel agents) yesterday, they knew nothing {why is this not a surprise? 🙂 }

Only flying to Holguin apparently, thus NOT serving the main tourist resort of Varadero.

    Sorry,

The title of this thread should of course be “America West Theme Planes”. Oops… 🙂

I think this scheme looks excellent – very distinctive!

We are flying Colombo -> LHR on 11th September. Hadn’t realised the date significance when we booked our holiday (not that it would have made any difference).

    RE: Charter Long Haul Services

2 years ago, we flew to Porlamar (Margarita) from Manchester with Air2000 on a 767 , seating config was 2-4-2. We were seated in a 2 & although worried about the space beforehand, it was actually surprisingly comfortable. The service was great, and wouldn’t have any hesitation in flying Air2000 again.

However, the same could not be said of (Sc)airtours with whom we flew to Antigua about 7 years ago – a 9-hour flight turned into 15 hours, and was just the absolute “flight from hell”.

    Gary

Incidentally , the flight had a stop-off on either the outbound or inbound flight (which seemed to vary from one week to the next) at St Kitts. I don’t think Air2000 offer that flight any more – seems that you now have to fly to Antigua & change onto LIAT for a short hop to St. Kitts…

RE: SriLankan to Colombo from LHR

Thanks very much for the information , much appreciated.

Just been onto the SriLankan website , noted that all seats have seatback-TV which is a long-haul must these days. Nice schedule of movies, though still shows June & no August list yet ?? It says that refreshments are served every 45mins, which sounds like a good idea.

Anyway, have joined the ‘Skywards’ scheme for free , which allows advance seat selection. I have reserved aisle & window seats in row 6 , which is the first economy row after business class & apparently offers a little more legroom. Ideally we would have preferred row 29, which is an exit-row, but these can only be allocated on check-in. We might have a possibility of getting these, as we are connecting to LHR from Glasgow with BMI, who have a code-share with SriLankan, so we’ll almost certainly be checking in at Glasgow before anyone arrives at Heathrow!! 🙂

I would still appreciate any feedback from anyone else who has flown with SriLankan, particularly the LHR-CMB route.

    Thanks again,

    Gary
