Kabir, with due respect, it’s not just a few weeks ago that the open skies agreement was put on the negotiating table- that has been in the works for some time too. As it happens, I simply don’t care which is a ‘slightly better’ aircraft. To me, they are pretty much even. It all comes down to political weight and yes, Bribes. I am not expressing any extra-ordinary dismay (I am a tad dissapointed though) over this deal, just trying to get across, that the ‘better’ product is not what decided this sale.

And i do agree that politics plays a leading role in selecting of aircrafts specially in a country like India but fortunately i think the civil aviation deals have been bribe free till now in India. Or atleast it seems so.

This has nothing to do with the better product. It has to do with the “Open Skies” agreement signed recently and also US political bullying.

It has nothing to do with Open Skies agreement… Open Skies came into place just a few weeks back, the Boeing deal has been in the pipeline for years. Air India has always been a Boeing customer for its long haul hop. The head honcho in Air India right now is pro-Boeing so the deal is no surprise to me. Except of a few people in the Air India board most of the others are just trouble makers with hardly any knowledge on aircraft specs or what exactly is Air India in need of.

About the politics part yes it is true India is trying to maintain the half-decent relation it has with USA, the Air India deal and if it happens the 126 F 16 deals to USA can get India better relations with USA. As for Airbus when it happens IC will definately go for an all Airbus overhaul. IC is looking for 43 aircrafst, Air India 50, if IC gives the deal to Airbus it pretty much evens out the political balance.

Apparently AC are pretty happy with the A345s but they’re hardly using them for the long range missions they were designed for. I think AC are using them as an alternative to the A343.

The AC ceo is quoted in saying “The A343 is a nice aircraft it just lacks power and range”

agreed because apparently AC operates an A343 on TOR-DEL route, which is i am guessing more suitable for for an A345 since its a 15 hrs journey.
