No, just the RAF making a ‘Herculean’ effort to brighten the day by sending one of their C130J’s on a visit.

Two more close-ups and the first shot of Boeing’s new concept, the Boeing 75757, known as the ‘Bendy.’

Simple idea really, one 757 inserts it’s nose into the rearend of another and it becomes a four engined aircraft. Fly to the continent of your choice and the aircraft separate to land at different destinations.

I’m sure it’ll catch on. (Well, it works with buses.)

I beg a little indulgence here before we carry on with the photo’s.

As most of those who have visited the AVP will know, there is a Churchyard on the corner. I have been meaning to have a look round the Churchyard for years and on Saturday I finally got around to it. Among the family stones there are two provided by the then Imperial War Graves Commission to those who died serving their Country in time of war. Made of Portland White stone, the first is to a private in the Cheshire Regiment who died in 1919. The second, is to Flight Captain Bernard Short of the Air Transport Auxiliary who died on the 24th of January, 1944.

For those not aware, the ATA was an organisation of civilian pilots and aircrew who ferried aircraft from the factories to their operational bases or from place to place around the Country. Women worked alongside the men and it was not uncommon for any of the pilots to fly any type with minimal instruction. It seems Flight Captain Short died while carrying out such duties, possibly alongside Senior Flight Engineer Arthur Bird who died the same day. I am actively trying to find out who he was and how he met his demise, and whether he died with Senior Flight Engineer Bird.

What has this to do with the Commercial Aviation Forum? Flight Captain Short died in the service of his Country, and as such, I believe we owe him a debt of gratitude. At the MAN meet on August 10th, I propose to spend a few minutes tidying his grave and to lay a wreath in his memory. I would be most grateful if any of you attending the meet on the day would care to join me.

No, we haven’t met. The Magister is an aeroplane that I have really taken a liking to. It seems perfect when displayed in the setting of Old Warden, it just seems so photogenic. I will be delighted to take up your offer and hope to see you at the next evening show.
