OK, here goes. All supposition of course.

8 – 1410 would appear to me to be an early service number so would most likely refer to Hampshire Regiment. Sergeant in 1916. Could well fit in with early service in the Hampshires rising to Sergeant. A trip to the PRO/NAA to check the Medal Roll would be useful. If he was wounded, he would have been awarded a Silver War Badge, there is a roll for that and, if they survived, his service records.

Now, assuming his injury to the left hand was a bad one he may have been invalided out of the Infantry and remustered to RFC if he had a special skill which was not impeded by his wound. That would account for the loss of rank. In the Second world war, a friend of my uncle’s managed to serve in the Navy, the Marines and the RAF.

Interesting photo. Swagger stick would normally be associated with NCO’s but many studios had one which the soldier held for effect.

    Hope this helps.

    Mauro.

If you can tell us the geographic location someone might be able to help more. Finding out the approximate date of the crash and other information from local people in the area would also help.

    Good luck.

Speeding spinster slams sedate stumbler in Supermarket smash.

    Absolutely classic!!!!

Moggy, the trolleys serial is incomplete, I managed to get ST 19467…… the rest being obscured by what looked suspiciously like dried blood and a tuft of human hair.

I think it sounds right too. Operating in that part of Africa would generate the Africa Star without Bar I believe. Check the deceased crew on the CWGC website to confirm and you definitely have enough to ring AHB to do a check. If you then send a letter they will give more details.

You have to take into account the views of ALL the interested parties and that includes those in favour of operations. The majority of people in the Coventry area would be totally apathetic to the situation because it does not directly concern them.

    Grey area.

Speaking of trolls, have we ever considered the possibility that danairboy is nothing but a nuis…., sorry, is nothing but an alternative identity of one of the longer standing members of the forum? Surely, he can’t actually be a real person otherwise he would have been institutionalised years ago.

“How is Coventry getting on? I hope the NIMBYs prevail and Coventry has to close to jets.”

Seem to be doing ok despite sentiment like yours. You would obviously prefer to see Thomsonfly’s staff out of work. Would you also feel ok about paying their benefits too? You are talking about ruining people’s lives because you don’t like no-frills airlines. What a crass and narrow minded view you have. Does the increase in traffic affect you personally? For example do you live beneath the flightpath or in the area where the Algerian 737 came down? If so, you may have a point, but to wish people to be deliberately put out of work because you don’t like lo-co’s is absurd.

“Anything to stop the proliferation of the no-frills carriers. They would start flying from a terminal the size of a cow shed!”

Here we are again, get rid of the no-frills. I don’t know about getting rid of them, there was a 757 operating there three weeks ago. And, isn’t the airport owned by TUI? Have you ever seen the terminal? Or used the airline? I have and it’s ok. It is developing and if it means I can get to see my friends in Valencia without travelling to LGW or taking a massively roundabout route from BHX, with all the extra time, expense and inconvenience that causes, then long may they continue.

“I think Coventry should offer seasonal flights to Jersey and perhaps a KLM City Hopper F50 to AMS but I think ThomsonFly should be made to fly away, permanently.”

Ignorance, arrogance and a total lack of thought for those working for Thomsonfly or the airport. On the point of closing the airport to jets, have you considered who else this might affect? I don’t think Atlantic would be particularly pleased as they operate one of the Antonov jets.

Absolutely disgraceful! And no Devonshire cream teas served either.

How much is air passenger duty? I don’t know how much it is. And how much is covered by airport taxes? Is there a set rate? Does it vary from airport to airport or regionally? How much covers security? Are there other variables which should be taken into account? How much is levied by the CAA and how much by the airport?

When you’ve answered all the questions above we might just have a chance of deciding just how ‘disgraceful’ it is.

Adding to Snappers post I have found a Norman Lee in the London Gazette Issue No. 37505 of the 19th march 1946.

This lists a Warrant Officer Norman Lee service no. 57757 promoted Pilot Officer on Probation (emergency) effective 14-2-46.

Bear in mind his substantive rank was WO so the promotion might never have been made substantive. His new number was 567373.

I suggest a phone call to the Air historical Branch of the MOD. They may do a quick search to see if ‘Norman Lee’ might be ‘Norman Benjamin Lee.’

Hope this helps but has probably just muddied the waters further.

Of course, we are forgetting the slim possibility that he could have been a fighter pilot. The Atlantic Star would point to the Hurricat units, MSFU? Long shot, but worth eliminating. I also found the Irvin link. Any chance you could provide the link for the Guinea Pig Club Register? That would be most appreciated.

So, it’s a case of keep digging.

    Good luck,
