Age is not a factor in this. At 21 she should have more common sense and if it is true that she repeated the statement several times that just compounds the problem. Suicide bombers in the past have been female and considerably younger.

Flood’s right in what he says here and this isn’t going to change any time soon. America will be hit again, as will many other countries, including I expect the UK.

True Ren. But it is only a matter of time before a suicide bomber walks into a terminal building and blows themselves up. It’s a soft target which would result in many casualties, especially now that many of these buildings are predominantly made of glass. I think terrorism and paranoia are part and parcel of today’s society and we have to make allowances for that.

I have no sympathy for her. She was said to be travelling home to renew her visa to stay with her boyfriend who is in the US Navy. That’s not going to happen now is it?

I’m rather put off by you lately as it happens. You have respect for the Americans who fought in World War Two, but no-one else, you make that plain. Unless of course they happened to fly the P-40.

How can someone, anyone, suggesting the P-40 wasn’t a decent aircraft be considered a crime? Unless everyone gives in to your arguments they are considered to be in the wrong by you.

So you should also understand that an aircraft is controlled by someone. It is they who can make a good aircraft look bad or a terrible aircraft look ok. As for getting off your case? Do you really think I’m that interested?

Have to jump in here. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the European war. Is that really what they taught you in school? American revisionist history?

And there is your grossest degree of ignorance yet. You don’t mean anything by calling the Japanese ‘Japs’ but but you don’t like being called a Yankee because you’re from the south. Don’t you think the Japanese might find it as offensive as you find being called a Yankee? Absolutely pathetic and a fine example of supercilious pomposity. If this is really how you think it is to be hoped that there aren’t many more Americans with that attitude.

Your views are noted and respected. I too lost an Uncle last year as a result of a violent attack. Again, the perpetrator was never caught. I have no qualms with the death penalty as long as there is incontravertible proof of guilt. But the death penalty does not exist in the UK. So it was right that Shipman was jailed for life, in this case meaning never to be released. He may at some point in the future have revealed more about his victims and his motives. It is tragic then that he was able to end his life at the time of his choosing, when he knew there was no hope of appeal. In this way he has cheated justice.

Just a word about value judgments. Your statement applies equally to you too. It appears I ‘have walked a mile in another persons shoes’ so I have some idea of what you are talking about.

I would have brought the death penalty back for Shipman in a heartbeat, Convicted of 15 murders, suspected of 215 and with a possibility of his total being even higher? He did not deserve to live to have the opportunity of ending his own life when he had had enough. That time should have been chosen for him, just as he chose when to kill his victims.

Harold Shipman has not done the decent thing, he has escaped justice. He needed to rot in prison then perhaps he may, and I only say may, have eventually admitted to just how many he had killed. That may have put some kind of closure to the whole affair for the families who remain uncertain whether he killed members of their family. Even his death at the hands of an executioner would have been preferable to this. For him to be able to end his life at the time of his choosing is terrible. None of his victims ever had that opportunity.
