Mine would be Old Warden in 1974 or 75. A lovely summer’s afternoon with the smell of grass (and castor oil), the first time I ever heard Merlins and the sheer exuberance of the Vintage Pair. I can hardly credit it being nearly 30 years ago.

This shot captures exactly what the day meant to Mark.

The contingent of three from the current 609 Squadron and a chap from the RAF Regiment who just said he wanted to be there.

It was a privelege to meet guys like these. The chap with the beard told me he was heartened to see a number of younger people at the Ceremony, and that someone of Mark’s age had done such a great job of organising the event.

Next up are the Standard bearers moving off.

    Comet.

You have no need to apologise for the forthright nature of your views. You are passionate and dedicated to your opinions. Those are qualities to be admired in anyone.

As you know my Uncle passed away last week and it is the fumeral this friday. I understand how you feel and know how easy it is to lash out.

Remember you are among friends here.

Ok then everyone shall we start looking for a serious date late in September? I’d prefer LHR but don’t mind LGW either. Let’s try and get a date firmed up as soon as possible so people have the necessary time to make travel arrangements.

Now, if anyone’s interested I’m still up for a trip to LHR early August as well. I drive and can carry three passengers so if we all shared the parking charges we could nip round to LGW as well. I’ll cover petrol costs and we could meet at the LHR visitor centre. This would be better for people near LHR obviously. So, what do you think?

For the August trip email or pm me. For the big meet in September we’ll go throught the board as it all worked out ok for the MAN meet.

It is a bit short notice so how about this. Go for late September for a proper meet, get as many people there as we can while there is still time for planning. In the meantime, I still fancy a trip to LHR early August so perhaps just one or two of those from the area could join me, and, of course, anyone else who’s interested.

    Ren,

absolutely superb shots! as usual! The viewing park is also good, I went there in the morning and that’s where I took most of my shots which were shown on another thread.

All in all a good day.

I’d just like to echo the other’s sentiments. I’ve been talking to Mark about this since he first started to consider the idea. Over time I have watched his efforts snowball from a simple affair to the extremely well attended event we were priveleged to be a part of today. The attendance was around 150 and in the small road where the Memorial is sited it was an impressive and emotional sight. As many of you will know I am an emotional person at the best of times and today was no exception. There was probably no-one other than Ron and Betty Who had known Alan or Johnny which made the turnout seem even more impressive. I am sure Alan and Johnny would have been very proud.

So, I offer a huge vote of thanks to Mark for bringing Johnny and Alan to our attention, and for allowing us the privelege and honour of being able to take part in this act of remeberance.

Two more of those lost have been honoured and remembered and we, in our turn, have paid another fraction of the debt we owe.

Mark’s last words to me as I left today were “I’ll see you here same time next year. ” I’ve a feeling he just might…..

Finally a photograph of the lowered standards during the two minutes silence courtesy of Mark’s wife Flo.

    Re: Legends – Sunday

    Moggy.

“I’m a flyer in a very minor way. I wouldn’t ever want my death to affect the human races fascination with defying the laws of gravity, to affect our poor imitation of the swallows and swifts I have watched scything through the darkening skies tonight.”

I know. And that is almost certainly the view of all those who flew at Legends today. That is why you’re going tomorrow, and although it is hard to comprehend, that is exactly why you will continue to visit airshows and enjoy seeing these aircraft in their element. And you’ll spare a thought for the crews and their families. It’s all we can do.

And, one fine summers evening, cruising in the Colt through a ‘matchless East Anglian sky’, you’ll smile to yourself at the sheer joy of taking flight, of sharing the same sky that the Firefly crew enjoyed, or the veterans of Bomber Command, or the 8th Air Force and the 388th.

I’ll see you in the morning.

Heard this dreadful news on the radio in the car. Like Macky I was going tomorrow and my first thoughts were ‘that’s it, I don’t want to go.’ Now, I’ve thought about and I’m definitely going. These crews fly these wonderful aircraft for our enjoyment and entertainment and as a memorial to those who flew the aircraft operationally. Sadly, as has been shown today, they sometimes do so at considerable risk. So, I’m going, as I feel it is the only way that I can personally do honour to these brave men and women. I’m never going to pilot a historic aircraft, so their performances give wings to my dreams. I’ll go, and during the day I’ll think about them, about what they give to each of us. In my own way I’ll pray for their safety and remember with joy the performances I have been priveleged to witness, and spare a few minutes to think of the Firefly crew.

Condolences to the friends and families of the crew.

    Respectfully,

    a saddened kev35.

    Monster 500.

Yes, extremely disturbing. I don’t remember the incident, were there fatalities? But you not only have to question the morals and ethics of someone who would sell such a picture, you have to question the motives of anyone interested in buying such a graphic and gratuitous image.

There must be a word for people who profit from the misfortunes of others, but I doubt the forum software would let you use it.

Many of my shots were taken in the morning before the others arrived. The others were using film so have to get them processed. I know Ren’s working this weekend so his will be on here early next week. Judging by his usual standards he should have some fantastic shots. I’m really looking forward to seeing them.

Last one for now, and probably my favourite……

T5, glad to hear you’re having a good time.

Wys, I don’t think Mike is a forum user, he is a friend of Steauw.

There are more if I haven’t already bored you silly….:)
