kev35Model kits for me. Mainly military aircraft but the odd airliner crept in. Somehow they never looked as good when covered in gluey fingerprints! I still build kits now, and I’m not necessarily any better at it but I enjoy dabbling. My other big passion as a child was books, and if it was an aircraft book so much the better.

But that’s true everywhere isn’t it? Polls are notoriously unreliable and, unfortunately, can often be manipulated to the user’s advantage. You say 91% of the Spanish population were against the war but that’s not true is it? 91% of the sample interviewed may have been against the war but that’s not necessarily a true reflection of the wishes of the people. It may even have been more, but I think that is doubtful. It was the same in the UK. The Government held a vote in the House of Commons in support of the war. As we all know the vote was carried. But how can we be sure that our Members of Parliament represent our views honestly? The truth is we can’t. Cetainly my MP never asked me what I thought about any issue, and he was never available if you wanted to talk to him. The essential truth is that any country is only as democratic as its Government allows.

None of the people I know consider themselves to be European ahead of British and as we all know Britain supported the war. The percentage of people supporting the war differs depending who commissioned the polls.

I don’t know very much about the technical aspects of operating an aircraft like Concorde but I would imagine the greatest costs are from fuel and maintenance. I very much doubt that swapping ‘champagne and caviar’ for beans on toast and a cup of tea would make that much difference to the profitability of the aircraft.. I would imagine that level of service was just a sop to encourage you that your flight was ‘something special.’

Michael, unless you were a frequent flyer on Concorde I think most people will manage just fine. It was an elitist concept aimed at a minute fraction of the air-travelling public. And its inception condemned the TSR2 project to an early demise, an aircraft that would have been far more useful to the nation than seven airframes whose main role seems to have been to ensure the ‘class’ gap remained an unbreachable one.

from the people I’ve researched I can confirm that a considerable number of widows didn’t remarry. Often the bond was so strong that many couldn’t consider loving another person. This attitude was confirmed to me by the widow of an air-bomber killed on Lancaster ops in 1942. A number of this lady’s friends were also widowed and never remarried. Shortly before she died she told me she would be meeting her beloved ‘Alex’ soon and that he came to her in uniform telling her everything would be alright. Who am I to argue?
Don’t worry about the pre-war fascist connection. Look at the cause for which he gave his life.
