They don’t offend me either. It’s actually quite amusing, but I do wonder whether all Americans are the same? Are these outbursts of aggression a facet of the psyche of all Americans? You disagree with someone or things don’t go your way so you resort to personal attacks?

Is this what’s happening with American foreign policy? You couldn’t find Osama Bin Laden so invaded Iraq instead? In America, just how deeply rooted is this inclination (I hesitate to call it instinct) to lash out?

Sorry, but I can’t believe you’re bemoaning the looting of a museum when the newly liberated are happily expressing their contempt for any type of society by looting and destroying hospitals. As to culture, do you really think the mobs currently marauding various liberated cities give a toss about culture?

A veritable melting pot of people who are largely tolerant of each other, with the odd exception, such as the KKK and other organisations who espouse the virtues of white supremacy. Remember many American ‘sub-cultures’ show their tolerance of others in the form of gang warfare. Jews went to America as much as they went anywhere else to avoid persecution. The original African-Americans’ didn’t go there by choice, but to join the institution of slavery, abolished 140 years ago but you were a bit slower with the issue of segregation.

Now this is what I find worrying. Only two weeks ago you were telling us how you were off to fly a mission. Therefore you must be reasonably educated, technically competent and one would hope have a measured temperament which enables you to act with reason at times of tension or crisis. This you ably demonstrate by your thinly veiled assumptions of someone’s sexuality. You may be an A-10 pilot, fly C-135’s or C-141’s or for all I know you might be the base dustman, but if this is the attitude you take with you into the air when’flying a mission’ God help your allies. Perhaps that’s why there are so many American inspired friendly fire incidents?

The majority of people are hoping the situation will calm down, but how long will it take and at what cost to the remaining infrastructure of a fractured society?

If you are not surprised by what is taking place then why did the military not plan an appropriate response to the breakdown of law and order?

You mean the palaces and the ministries. Incidentally, why is the oil ministry the only public building to be protected by US troops? With the altruistic reasons for America’s involvement in Iraq it seems incredible that US troops are standing idly by while hospitals are ransacked and destroyed. Surely the way to win hearts and minds is by protecting such places and instilling a climate where the people work together with their ‘liberators’ to restore society. We keep hearing Iraqis on the news saying how pleased they are to have the Americans in Baghdad. Of course they are, they have gone from oppression to anarchy in the space of a few hours. America stated it was their intention to liberate the people of Iraq but at the moment it seems they have jumped from the frying pan into the fire.

Just heard that General Franks has said that the Iraqi leadership are ‘either dead or running like hell.’ In other words there is still absolutely no evidence as to the whereabouts or health of the main leadership. I would have thought it would have been wise to either capture Saddam or at least have a body they could show. I fail to see how that can happen when they drop 8,000 lbs of bombs on a building he is supposed to be inside? There wouldn’t be enough left of him to fill a freezer bag would there?
