So, in your opinion, the future for the Iraqi people lies in the west’s hands? Do you not think that if the Iraqi people were that dissatisfied with their lot that they would rise up in their millions and oust Hussein theirselves? Isn’t it a case of the better the devil you know?

But is it only the west? The former Soviet Union supported many third world regimes, not with food aid and health care but with weapons

What about people in the US and Europe? Do you know how much malnutrition there is in Europe and the US? In the UK each winter thousands of old people die because they can’t afford to eat and stay warm. And because of that they become debilitated through not eating properly while trying to keep warm or are admitted to hospital with hypothermia. Can we at least get our own house in order before trying to save the world?

Wombat has already mentioned Mugabe’s advocation of the murder of white farmers and the redistriburion of land. I’ve got no problem with the redistribution of the land but in many cases the farm buildings are destroyed, those who worked the land are beaten and/or murdered and the land lies derelict with crops dying. What is the point of that? And why should we have any sympathy for a country which is doing that to itself?

An unequivocal yes for both of them.

As already said, premeditated multiple murder, extortion and a possible link to terrorism as the older of the two is sais to be a supporter of Bin Laden and al-Qaeda are more than enough to warrant the death penalty. The age of the accomplice is irrelevant. He is 17 years old for God’s sake. If he was five you could say his age is a factor but at seventeen he is wholly responsible for his own actions and should therefore face the consequences.

Glenn said the one’s military service might count in his favour? I would hope not. He used his military skills to hold several million people in fear and to then try to extort the authorities for personal gain. He should expect only what he gave…death.

One thing that sickens me though is the fact that three states are arguing over the right to try them. In America’s currently litiginous society will they still be arguing when one of the later victims families sues a state authority for not catching them sooner?

Ja, you know better than that. I was only asking for a direct source eg channel name or website address specifically so I can check the details myself. The whole purpose of that was to avoid jumping in with both feet (which I did initially), when other evidence points to a different view.

Why discuss it in private? Air it as a topic. Perhaps the problem there lies with the fact that some of us have little or no knowledge of the airline industry in that part of the world. So we tend not to post on subjects we have little or no knowledge of. I know I don’t know too much about the airline industry full stop, let alone how it affects specific areas of the world.

Now hang on Ja, is it really so long ago that you were being accused of the very same thing? There is room for everyone on here. We each have value, we all bring something different to the forum, if you are threatening to leave (again) just because you are a little upset with someone else’s views how do you cope in wider society? We’re talking about the future of the forum, how it can be enlivened and made more interesting to everyone and your answer is a veiled reference to leaving? Your input, just like everyone else’s is invaluable.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-10-02 AT 06:11 PM (GMT)]America’s insistence on the removal of Saddam Hussein from power seems to have little support and they are now changing their minds and saying that he may be allowed to remain in power. America was going to go ahead and invade Iraq on their own but the tension now seems to be easing.

The war on terrorism is not going well. Bali, the attack on American soldiers in Kuwait, the attack on the French oil tanker, continued suicide bombings in Israel and hijackings are still being attempted. America has still not dealt with the al-Qaeda and Taleban prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.

Afghanistan is barely more stable than it was under the Taleban as evidenced by the bombigs and attempts on the President’s life.

Internally they seem no further forward in capturing those responsible for the spread of anthrax last year. Today they bungled the arrest of the suspected sniper who promptly replied to their incompetence by killing another innocent victim.

Can we honestly say that American influence in the world is as strong as it once was? Unless of course they use the odd carrier battle group to persuade those with a different perspective?

The Sun newspaper today reported that the woman’s husband had a seat in the row behind his wife. To me the question then arises as to why the airline did not make the husband sit next to his wife?

Another issue is the level of compensation paid for injuries which were as severe as those this woman suffered. Emergency hospital treatment, bedridden for a month, chronic pain and being forced to use a walking stick. In the current climate of litigation and the obscene amounts of compensation paid over the most trivial of incidents then surely £13,000 is a paltry amount.

Also, could Virgin not now sue the obese woman passenger? She had the foresight to book two seats for her outward journey, could it be considered negligence on her part that she booked a single seat for her return? She obviously booked two seats due to her size, did she really think she would lose enough weight to book a single for the return?
