I was just making the point that it behoves us all to ensure we all know, respect and try to understand what our families have done in the past, so that we can pass it on to the future generations, so that they live on in our personal and collective memories.

Might I suggest that it is important that people should have respect for and pride in the achievements of family members engaged in the service of their country. Irrespective of which conflict or which nation I believe it to be imperative that we record the service that people have given to their country and not only the sacrifice. In 100 years time people should be able to see what your family has contributed to your nation as it stands at that time. For instance, my family was heavily involved in the Great War and I am immensely proud of the service they gave. They were lucky and all came home. Millions of people have died in conflicts all around the world and we pause to remember the dead on various occasions throughout the year. We should also remember the service of those who fought and survived.

it’s nice that you have the ambition to join the RAF and be a fast jet pilot. The RAF has a shortfall in personnel so all I can say is good luck to you.

Things were just the same in the 70’s when I was in the ATC. Numbers were falling even then. There were a lot of people who would join and stay for just a few weeks, and you’re right they would miss out on a lot of things. So, perhaps it’s best that the interested ones stay. I know I got a lot out of my time in the ATC. I think your comment about todays youth is a bit rough though. We live in a society where our watchword is personal choice and it really is a case of whatever floats your boat. As for serving your country, well, that’s just a distant dream at the moment. At present, it’s a case of your country serving you by giving you the opportunity to take part in all the activities the ATC allows.

We’ll take a look at the RAF list in about eight years time and hopefully we’ll see a Pilot Officer Scott.

I think in this kind of job you have to do ‘live’ training to understand and become accustomed to the pressure you will be working under. I expect they spend a great deal of time using simulators or exercises and the like. However, in a sim they have no chance of actually killing several hundred people. Air traffic control is something I would have liked to have done in a dream world but I realised I have neither the aotitude or the talent for such a job.

sorry to hear about your neighbour problems, we had five years of that, and, after involving the police numerous times to no avail, I must admit I resorted to using my fists, several times! It did no good really, just made me feel better. It was such a relief when they finally left, it was almost like getting your life back. I think that’s one of the things people really fear now, having troublesome neighbours. You tell the police about the drugs and they don’t care, you talk to environmental health about the noise but they won’t come and listen at 3am when your windows are rattling because the music is so loud. Sorry to be gloom and doom, I hope your problem gets sorted soon.

don’t be too disheartened, these people truly are the mindless majority. However, there are those among the hooligan groups who represent themselves as leaders. Many of them have respectable jobs, good families and are in it purely for the thrill of the strategy. Marshalling their troops against the opposing hooligans or the police. These are the ones who need stopping as hooligans without a leader really are a mindless bunch of thugs with no direction who are more easily routed or controlled.

I think you’re right about left footed players. It’s not that we hate them, just that we haven’t produced many good ones. I wonder whether that’s a throwback to the days in the UK when kids were punished by their teachers for being left handed or left footed. My mother was left handed and she was not allowed to use her left hand for writing (she was naturally left handed) and was then chastised because her written work was so poor with her right hand.

Isn’t it funny how we get differing versions of events? ITN news stated that the aircraft were separated by a lateral distance of two miles when the er, misunderstanding was brought under control.
