    RE: Bareing one’s soul.

    Ja,

I don’t particularly think naturism is wrong but it is often misinterpreted. Years ago I worked for a national newspaper and magazine distributor and we distributed the main naturism magazine for the UK. In the area I worked, there were very few copies ordered by individuals, the vast majority went as top shelf magazines to those too embarassed to buy more overtly top shelf titles.

I don’t think it is right to enforce naturism on children just as much as I don’t think it is right to enforce religion, until they are old enough to make up their own minds. With the best will in the world, I don’t think you can make it safe. With the way paedophilia invades our societies today you can bet your bottom dollar that at least one man/woman at a naturist event surreptitiously gets their jollies from watching children.

    RE: bye bye England

First of all, It’s not that disappointing that England lost. It’s the manner in which they lost that matters. I felt that they played pretty well the first half. The injury to Seaman may have contributed to the first goal. Either way it was a brilliant Brazilian move at a time when England appeared to have already decided it was half time. The second half display was very poor. Seaman was at fault for the goal, as good as it was. But everyone makes mistakes and he has had a brilliant tournament. His tears are probably at least partly because he knows he’s not going to be there in 4 years time and there is no one outstanding to replace him. Beckham, although he didn’t play well still put in the most effort. Perhaps it was the heat, the inexperience of a relatively young side, just one game too many, or more likely, the Brazilians were just the better team! No disgrace and no regrets. Let’s hope the Koreans and Senegal can put some real magic back into the tournament.

Regarding English hooligans. Don’t worry, they’re alive and well and playing at home. Last Saturday in my town there was considerable violence and unrest among England fans, who, having no one else to fight, fought happily amongst themselves. And that was after England won. A number of shop windows were broken. At 10.30 this morning they were trying to break the windows on a bus and chasing cars. They were also trying to break the same shop windows again. A few minutes later, two groups wearing England shirts were happily kicking the crap out of each other while redecorating the inside of McDonalds with their blood.

You may not be able to rely on the team but you can always rely on the hooligans!

Makes you proud to be British. (NOT)!

    RE: Another PLO victory

    JJ,

Thanks, think i’m getting there slow but sure.

“Also note that what is now known as Jordan was originally also part of the Mandate of Palestine, untill the Brits decided to give it to the Hashemite family. Hence Israel’s decades-long argument that there already is a Palestinian state.”

So, the Palestinians should all be living in Jordan then. If that’s the case, where do we put all the Jordanians? Didn’t King Hussein kill thousands of Palestinians living in camps in the 60’s or 70’s?
    What was all that about?

“Jews always remained in the land of Israel. In Hebron there was an Jewish presence for centuries, in Jerusalem Jews lived since forever. In the entire land of Israel there was always a Jewish presence.”

But the land of Israel exists in books and scriptures which have never been proved to be true or indeed untrue. In that sense, if you have no christian belief, Isn’t Israel just as ethereal and insubstantial a place as Camelot or Xanadu? And haven’t Palestinians always had a presence in Israel?

“But some Arabs stayed, and they enjoy all the benefits of living in a democratic state.”

I am English and therefore consider myself to be living in a democratic state. I don’t see having tanks demolishing half of my town as a benefit. I wouldn’t consider it beneficial to have my family’s home demolished with 2 hours notice so that a settler from somewhere else can come in. I have never had to live under curfew and have never been prevented from taking a sick family member to the nearest hospital. Are these also the benefits of living in a democratic state@

    RE: Another PLO victory

    JJ,

Thanks for the interesting reply, I appreciate it. If I understand you correctly, the Jewish people were dispersed across Europe (the diaspora) by the Roman Empire. Therefore for the best part of 2,000 years there was no Jewish state.

“These movements are intent on destroying Israel because they feel the land is theirs, and theirs only. They do not want to compromize, all they want (well, all) is the entire land that was once the Mandate of Palestine. Any compromize, or offer to compromize, has been rejected out of hand.”

You say they want “the entire land that was once the Mandate of Palestine.” So you agree that Palestine existed. But now Israel exists on that same piece of land. So, what happened to Palestine? Did Palestine and the Palestinian people cease to exist? Are you saying thet Israel and the Jewish people just planted themselves there and said o.k., I call this patch of land Israel? By what/whose authority? Do the Jewish people believe they have the authority to claim that land as their own to the detriment of the Palestinians already living there? The state of Israel was, I believe, created in 1948, but do you believe it was right that your nation should be set up on someone else’s land and expect the indigenous population not to fight back? Iraq occupied Kuwait during the Gulf War and Israel supported, politically, the resumption of the status quo, but conveniently forgets that to the Palestinians they are an occupying power. Israel has pushed the Palestinians into two pockets of land, the west bank and gaza and keeps the rest for themselves. Can this truly be justified?

“Since Israel is not about to surrender, and just give the land to
the Palestinians,” No, Israel is not about to surrender, but it seems surprising that you expect the Palestinians to.

I know you are really going to rip into me for this but these are questions to which I would like answers. I really do wish that a settlement could be reached. If a Palestinian child is shot dead by the Israeli military and an Israeli child dies in a Palestinian bus bombing, all you are left with are two dead children.

We have the technology to travel to the moon, we are building a space station, we can telephone each other from the other side of the world,
we can transplant human hearts so for Christ’s sake why can’t we sort out this mess? surely, there is enough room for everyone?

JJ, I sincerely hope this conflict ends soon. As a people, jews have suffered enough in this last century, and the Palestinians and yourselves are suffering enough now.

RE: Pic of the Day – 19/06/2002

    Kabir,

It would indeed be a magnificent sight but there are a couple of problems. When the original WTC was built it was a failure as it was less than half occupied until the mid 80’s. Since 9/11 I think it unlikely that many of the companies who lost a lot of staff would ever want to put their people at such a risk again. The FDNY, NYPD and PAPD lost so many people that day that to build again in such a fashion would be immoral. Since 9/11, it has come to light from some of the firefighters personal testimonies that by and large they are so inadequately equipped that many buy their own tools and safety gear. Another interesting thing is that firefighters work either nine or fifteen hour shifts, and although each firehouse has a kitchen, the firefighters have to buy their own food.

Such are the ways the world treats it’s heroes.

    JJ,

I’m not criticising or trying to cause offence, just trying to understand. Why, exactly, are Israel and the Jewish people hated so much? What would drive people to destroy their own lives in order to kill more of their ‘enemy’? Why do these movements which are representatives of the Palestinian people want to destroy Israel?

RE: Thank you note for Belgians.

    Tomel,

“I would be proud if my nation can produced weapons that may
    have saved 1000s of lives.”

The other side of that statement of yours is, of course, that those weapons have also taken thousands of lives. There’s always two ways of looking at these these things.

It’s interesting to think that the arms race started not in the last Century but thousands of years ago. You can gaurantee that as soon as man came up with the club it wasn’t long before somebody set themselves up in business selling “new, improved clubs.” Someone created the bow and arrow, at last you could kill your enemies at range. So, armour was invented to destroy the dominance of the bow and arrow. Then comes the armour piercing arrow to punch through plate and mail. More up to date comes the atomic bomb. It’s use against Japan saved countless thousands of allied lives, but at the cost of hundreds of thousands of Japanese lives over a period of fifty years. And still the race goes on…

The only certain conlusion to be drawn from this is that there are only two winners, the arms manufacturers and the arms dealers. And apparently that puts Belgium pretty high up the leaderboard.

    RE: C-130 crash

The real tragedy of this incident is that the fires which were being fought were alledgedly started, albeit inadvertantly, by a Park Ranger, who decided to burn a letter from her estranged husband.

As for the crash, it must have been some kind of catastrophic failure. I hope this is not going to turn out to be something which might afflict all C-130’s of a certain age.

As always, our thoughts must be with the families of the crew.
