About your signature quote matt, you know Rummy won the Foot in Mouth award for that sentence!?

And as for the other planes you mentioned, well, the J-8 was supposed to be in service by the late 60s or early 70s (so no surprise it was based on the Mig-21), but due to the Cultural Revolution, was severely delayed. So I think that all the current Mig-21 based designs are kind of like carry-overs from the effects of the CR, that after they are phased out of service (which should be awhile considering how thrifty the PLAAF is), the new generation of aircraft will be much different.

There have also been a variety of DF-prototypes that look nothing like the Mig-21. But in many cases, why re-invent the wheel when you’ve got a threadbare budget (as in the case of GAIC or the early PLAAF designers in the 60s-80s)?

The reason is that the FTC-2000/GJ-9 is made by GAIC (Guizhou Aircraft Industry Corporation), a company whose only other successful product has been the other trainers, the JJ-7A or FT-7. They are marketting this bird because if they don’t they’ll go out of business, most probably because they aren’t as technologically advanced as rival groups like Hongdu, and this is the best that they can do. And since they’re trying to maximize profit by saving resources, they might as well choose a tried and true design that they know how to work with.

If you’ll note Hongdu’s LIFT, the L-15, looks nothing like a Mig-21 derivative.

I don’t know that it’s the PLAAF’s future AJT, more like a private venture IMO. The PLAAF will probably go with the L-15, scheduled to test fly next year.

Well thanks, the web master will move this then, but the articles you posted aren’t related to the Tornado in any event.

I was just about to say that- I think I saw a dodge viper vs. an F-16 once, and I’m pretty sure the Viper won though??

What? the IAF lost a Mig-29? Are you sure that’s not supposed to be a Mig-21?

Jack in the box and in ‘n out are so over-rated.

Anyone try BK’s new southwestern BBQ baguette? I felt so cheated- that thing was tiny! I guess that where the fast food chains are headed these days, small and tiny “healthy” sandwiches.
