Awful, awful news. Eddie was an extremely skilled pilot and had been flying at shows for about 50 years. He organised the fly-in part of the annual ‘Pacific Coast Dream Machines’ event at his home field at Half Moon Bay, where he always hosted a hangar party on the Saturday evening. He was the nicest guy you could hope to meet, and would always stop to say hello and have a few words whenever you saw him at an event. Condolences to his son, Eddie Jr, and the rest of his family. RIP Eddie. 🙁
The tailplane looks like an inverted Constellation one to me, with the remains of the outer fins still in place.
To most Americans, even those in the USAF, all ‘aircraft’ are ‘jets’, the two terms are synonymous to them. I well remember when we took the P-63 to Alconbury airshow in the 1980s, all the ground crew guys spent the whole weekend referring to it as a ‘jet’.
Really? But apparently getting planning permission and external funding for a specific, dedicated workshop area and then using it for hairdressing conventions isn’t in breach of anything. Bizarre!
Soon after the Gnats had finished flying for the afternoon, the occupants of this lovely Biggin Hill-based Miles Messenger dropped into The Squadron for a cup of tea en-route back home from a visit to Sywell.
It was not a photo sortie, the two aircraft were flying back together from the event at Half Moon Bay with a crew member from the Sea Fury’s operators flying the 210. 🙁
Their figure of around £6m sounds somewhere in the ballpark, so at least they are going in to this with a realistic expectation of the sort of funding required, which is, as Bruce states, a step in the right direction.
