Indeed, but in my view it was still a cop-out. Many other national museums in that situation, with the offer of a rare and relevant addition to the collection, would have gone the HLF grant and/or national fundraising appeal route rather than simply flogging off the family silver.
Well, the Komet was flogged off as a quick, easy and entirely unimaginative way to raise a few quid, so there has been a precedent.
And as for the number of campaigns the B-25 has flown in, or the amount of work done on the TBM, exactly the same could be said of the Ju-52 and Storch. And look what happened to them. π

The TBM, B-25 and T-33 were listed by the IWM as being available for disposal a couple of years ago, this is fact and not speculation.
I wonder if this rumour originated with somebody hearing that “the Mark I Spitfire at Duxford is for sale”, meaning the Mark One Partners example, and got their wires crossed somewhere along the line.

Are we sure that it hasn’t been flogged to the Poles for tuppence ha’penny, and that the lorry leaving Duxford this week wasn’t in fact heading to the docks?
End of the day it is a Magazine based forum for those that read or purchase their product.
Is it? I wasn’t aware that it was a requirement to be a FlyPast subscriber or purchaser to participate here, and I suspect that if such a requirement were introduced the number of active participants would be substantially reduced
In the last few months, Mike Houghton, RARA President, has been talking about this yearβs event being in jeopardy if $500,000 was not raised by December 15th. Just in the nick of time, we were told the event is back on. This leaves many people wondering about the long term viability β and if this will continue to be a year to year endeavor.
Houghton is no longer RARA President, the post, along with several others, having been eliminated as a cost-saving measure.
Just to clarify, it is not in its original paint, but a later wartime scheme.
The Spitfire is no longer at Duxford, but has already returned to Lambeth.
