There might be an urgent need to scramble a Spitfire, but it is probably quite delicate, so best that it not be left outside to fry in the sun or boil in a hot hangar.
It’s a Horton Ho IV
Part of the ongoing meltdown of the Spitfire Society, I suppose. Sad, but at least the replica has gone to a good home. 🙁
Pretty looking aeroplane.
I bet if they’d have stuck a radar in the nose and a MAD boom on the back, and added a bomb bay, it would have made a great MPA platform.
Useless in the UK unfortunately Rick, as they only hold those little American short-measure pints! 🙂
Is say find a seventh one 😀
Is the dismantled T7 still sitting in the open over on the North side at Duxford? If so, it would be great if that could be rescued and given a good home while it is still worth saving.
Thanks, here’s another swinging shot of the Brooklands Camel.
Hopefully the Collection will be able to replicate that scene with their own example before too much longer.
Dear oh dear we can’t have a flyover the PC brigade would have kittens and drop a stitch while yoghurt knitting. We might upset the Germans or the poor woolley lambs in the fields nearby.
What on earth are you blithering on about?
Thanks for posting the shots Mark. It really is a great museum, although it is a shame that the only caff there is a McDonalds! I did take rather a liking to the Loening, but unfortunately they made me leave it behind.
It seems so, yes. Although why anyone there would tell you their B-17 came from the AF Museum I have no idea.

It is a nice museum, with very friendly (if a little over-enthusiastic) docents. While my wife was waiting for me while I was busy taking some photos in the main building, one of them kidnapped her and frog-marched her off to watch a movie, after explaining to her in detail the minutae of the various aero engines and guns on display, which she was absolutely thrilled about! 🙂
We did both enjoy the memorial gardens and replica church, though.
To my knowledge those 2 are owned by the AF museum and are on loan to the mentioned locations.
‘The Swoose’ was owned by the Smithsonian, and has now been passed to the AF Museum. It has had a little bit of work done on it, but restoration will start in earnest once ‘Memphis Belle’ is finished. The unrestored G-model that was previously held by the Smithsonian (NOT the AF Museum) was passed to the museum at Savannah (‘The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force’, as they are now known) a couple of years back, where it is now under restoration. The plan, apparently, is for the AF Museum to swap out their currntly-displayed B-17G ‘Shoo Shoo Baby’ for the ‘Belle and ‘The Swoose’, and then pass ‘Shoo Shoo Baby’ to the Smithsonian for display.
Probably the finest collection in the world…but too bad they have some huge omissions (B-17 the most obvious).
They’ve just disposed of two (to Savannah and Dayton) so I’m sure they’ll eventually end up with ‘Shoo Shoo Baby’ at some point, if reports are to be believed.
So were any ‘toggies’ hanging around the fence today?
mmitch.
Yes, it was a great day of intensive flying in fantastic light. Well worth the trip up there, and I’m really, really happy with my shots from the day. Lots of opportunities to move around to different parts of the airfield and get plenty of unusual angles you can’t get from the crowd line at airshows. The lunchtime fish & chips in the village were most excellent too! :applause:
So the IWM are listing BBMF participation by the Lancaster/Spitfire/Hurricane for the Spring Airshow on May 26th, but it is not on the official BBMF schedule.
Judging by his comments on the Bluebird thread, I think that Black Knight would like you to fire it up and take it out on another record run.
