There was a comment in the latest RAF Museum annual report to the effect that it is possible that it may never be recovered due to the political situation in Egypt.

And then it sat for a year in primer, as they missed the available hangar slot last winter due to storm damage.

It does look very nice, but you have to wonder what it is like underneath the shiny new paint after two decades or more out in the weather.

Don’t Middle Wallop already have examples of both?

In the post Haddon-Cave world, I very much doubt that anyone in the RAF will be prepared to sign on the dotted line for anything that doesn’t conform strictly to the regulations. You only have to look at the Cosford VC-10 situation if you want an example of the prevailing risk-averse mentality in the service nowadays.

They haven’t said that they are unwilling to take the gliders, only that it will be some years before they can give a decision.

….be wangled onto some sort of temporary permit be it military or civilian to allow them to fly.

Is there such a thing? If an aircraft is unable to qualify for a CAA Permit to Fly, under what category would it be allowed to fly in a major event?

It would seem that the RAF Museum is evolving more and more towards becoming a pair of local Museums. It is very instructional to note the comments that “the Museum has assumed a new strategic direction”, and “the Horsa has important and relevant local links to Cosford”. Coupled with this is the appointment of a new CEO with a career history in local museums and no aviation background whatsoever.

And the reception in Wing Co Joe’s caff? 😀

I would think it would be more appropriate to hold such an event at a current RAF Station, with a suitable Officers’ Mess to hold the reception in. Halton, perhaps?

That was certainly the idea promulgated here:

But they could organise a flypast of the palace, with aircraft representing the various eras of the RAF.

Stars could include RE2, SE5A, camel, Hind, Gladiator, Blenheim, Spits, Hurricanes, Lancaster, Dakota, Meteor, Canberra, Hunter, Vulcan, Harrier (c/o US marines 😀 ) Phantom, Tornado, Typhoon, Hawk. Hercules etc

I’ve seen some barking mad ideas floated on here over the years. Flying rotary-engined aircraft over Buckingham Palace must be up there with the wackiest of them.

I wonder whats going to get repainted next?

    The Dart Herald.

From the IWM collection, after the F-15A, probably some of the aircraft due to come out of the AAM this coming summer.

…would I be out-of-order to mention the ‘available’ Halifax fuselage that the IWM owns?

Just to clarify, although described above as a ‘fuselage’ this is a nose section only. And AFAIK it is not on the lIWM’s ilst of potential disposals, so is not ‘available’.

I don’t think there is a ‘project’ as such, at least not beyond a Facebook page and a lot of wishful thinking at this stage.
