an ICBM targetted all airfields the Vs operated from, including all dispersal sites
Its makes you “shudder” when you think of just how much of the UK would have been targeted….and if it did kick-off how much of the UK would be destroyed. Im guessing probably the biggest target nearest to me would have been USAF/RAF Burtonwood because as you guys know it was a huge storage/forwarding depot to feed a war in Europe….and a V-Bomber dispersal point….Id love to find out if there were any loaded aircraft at Burtonwood during the days surrounding the Cuban Missile Crisis awaiting a scarmble!!!

Many thanks to TwinOtter 23 for the NEWARK Newsletter….Amzing piece in it telling how the V-Force was dispersed and set on 15Mins readiness during the cuban missile crisis whilst other squadrons were partying on an exercise in Malta .
Info like this is (to me anyway) priceless as it hammers home the fact how serious this was…( ie UK aircraft were loaded and ready to roll) and the fact that it very very nearly could have gone the other way!!!
Thanks again TwinOtter!!!
excellent info chaps….I fear we may never know the true answer, but I really think the namings projected the era and the purpose very well…..Im my limited knowledge the country was on the up and up and wanted to still be one of the major forces on the world stage. and what better way to portray it than VALIENT,VICTOR & VULCAN aircraft…..Im not sure if was true or just a quote to dramatise the programme but, I have seen a programme that says when the Cold War was over and the UK had official visits from the Soviet powers that be, the first thing they wanted to see was “A Vulcan”…..in your learned opinions do you chaps think that our very own V Force did play a small part in keeping the peace (Peace meaning not an all out nuclear exchange)
RIP Flt Lt Jon Egging an elite member of an elite team flying the flag for GB…..The best of the best!!
Very detailed info mate, Thanks very much!!:D
my problem is that they are never as PIN SHARP as the usual images posted on here, Am i expexcting too much of my equipment ? or do you chaps have any tips I could try to get sharper images?
Great info JT442, thanks mate….I take it that The comet DID revolutionise the aircraft industry, but for very different reasons than was predicted 🙁
For the constant monitering is visual combined with NDT checks at certain intervals….if so how is the NDT carried out….I have seen NDT on the Vulcan using a type of X ray, is it similar to that ?
Pardon my nievity, but didnt the EE lightning have one of the highest maintenance ratios of any jet aircraft in its time…..
LOL great info mate, when you mention CHARGING is that charging the compressed air bottles onboard ?
Thanks for sharing your expertise with laymans like me:o it is most appreciated!!!!
I didnt like to pester, the guys seemed to be busy……I was just hanging around in the hope one of them would say, care for a look upstairs, but as i say I think they had there hands full…..One thing I thought is great , not sure if its original HP, but the first thing you see when entering the cockpit is a “MADE IN ENGLAND” plate!!! it made me think of her first duty as part of the V force and the pilots seeing this sign as they scrambled…..or perhaps in her latter days on the Black Buck missions!….as I say i never fail to be impressed with Lindy no matter how many times we visit I think she represents a very real part of our history, and I like to think that without the part she and her colleuges played during the “Cold” years, history could have been very very different indeed….So thanks for taking such good care of her!!!!
Sorry if this is a re-post, but in a film called “THE IRON MAIDEN” which is a film about a traction engine, the traction engine owner is the designer of a new “JET AIRLINER” which is really a HP VICTOR B1 in anti-flash white….there are quite a few shots of the aircraft too. even if it hasnt got any windows for the passengers  watch the clip at about 8mins 30
