So what happens when two stealth fighters go face to face? Are either of them remotely likely to get radar locks at ranges worthy of BVR combat? And if they do, how likely is a missile seeker going to keep and maintain a lock?
I asked that myself.
the cannon will ALWAYS be a useful weapon, I believe.
right now I’m thinking about warning shots for an airliner in the night. :diablo:
OFFTOPIC
imagine this:
the F-22 and PAK-FA going head to head, and NOT detecting each other. 😀
until WVR. 😉
It should be noted the Typhoons canards are not used to make the aircraft pitch up quite the reverse.
[…]
You can actually see the canards pointing downwards against the loop which is counter intuitive to the way normal canards behave.
I read about the EF2000’s highly unstable design. and I noticed the canard movements, but I believed it’s got to do w/ creating a lift vortex together w/ the wing.. not countering the airframe’s instability..
just one sort of offtopic question; how does the EF2000 compare to the Rafale and Gripen, in terms of maneuverability? they must have been built w/ the same instability concept in mind, hence the canards. not?
F-22s have been successfully tested against US E-2s and E-3s – AWACs – if they can get within AMRAAM range against such platforms before being detected – Mig-XX/Su-XX will have a major problems – the term “rival” doesn’t apply.
do you have any links for that claim? 😀 I’m very surprised by this feat.
well.. if the new variant of the MiG-31 would be upgraded w/ a very high-power AESA RADAR, OLS, body coated in RAM, and having 5th gen ECM devices, maybe it could get close to an F-22, undamaged.. and maybe w/ thrust vectoring, light composite airframe, bubble glass canopy and canards, it could even pose a serious threat in WVR combat..
(this post is ironical)
Rafale and Typhoon have the SAME corner speed and this is from a Typhoon pilot, i.e Tarnished.
I always wondered about this. so, are you suggesting that the two are equivalent turnfight-wise? and what about the Gripen’s maneuverability? and the J-10’s?
How is the EF better than the Su-35? LOL.
This should be good.
(1) Price? No. (Russian vs West, no brainer)
(2) Maneuverability? No. (3D TVC is pretty killer)
(3) Weapons package and payload? No. (No need to elaborate)
(4) Range? LOL?
(5) Radar power possibility? Not even comparable.
(6) ECM package possibility? Not even comparable.
1.. guess that’s right.
2.. hmm. even w/ the 3D TVC, it’s still a ~30 year old airframe design.
just because the EF doesn’t do stunts doesn’t mean it’s inferior.
I am pretty confident it has better turn rates than Su-35.. if you have any numbers though, I’d be happy to learn.
3.. I hear the EF would probably carry the Meteor as well? the ASRAAM is said to be tough.. the IRIS-T just as tough?
4.. idem 1..
5.. idem 4..
6.. hmmmmmmmmm.
I can’t wait to see how the finished fighter will look.
if it was sort of like the F-22 but w/ canards, I’d fall in love instantly.
now, I know, I know — it probably won’t have canards. 🙂
and I wonder how the EF2000 will match up..
I’m worried it may be trailing behind these 5th gen fighters.
just a question: shouldn’t a Su-35 detect an F-35 head-on before the F-35 detects the Su-35?
and what about the OLS the Su-35/MiG-35 ought to be carrying?
This is because, despite being much lighter than Su-27 and able to carry much higher external weapon-load, it can execute 9G manouevers. Thus, under only canons, it is likely to outmanouever the Su-27.
from what I know, the Su-27 and MiG-29 were specifically designed to beat the F-15 and F-16, respectively.
it’s folly to say that the Su-27 is less maneuverable than the F-15.
and who says the Flanker can’t execute 9G maneuvers? the official G-limit is 9.
I was sure that the Su-30 was superior to the F-15E, and that the latter was obsolete.
thanks for replying to this thread, as you can see, there’s not much interest in the topic, it seems.
still, the original question was about the best dogfighter.
a pure cannon modern fighter, and w/o the advantage of advanced short-range missiles.
more or less, this was supposed to be a thread where people would bring numbers to back up their position, like turn rates, t/w ratios and so on.
personally, one of my biggest mysteries is why the EF2000 is considered by many a superior dogfighter to both the Rafale and Su-35. it doesn’t even have thrust-vectoring.
Mod:
Please close and delete thread.
I won’t forget that desperate cry for freedom!
OK then, I’ll back off. maybe I had the wrong impression when I joined.
thread bump. :diablo:
LOL, it’s like you guys don’t have opinions.
come on, somebody come w/ the numbers!
I don’t know of the worst, but I’m thinking of a few candidates for the ugliest.
I’m sure you’ll recognize them.

MiG-21’s are obsolete, “tired”, and crash quite often.
so that’s probably the worst aircraft you could pick for a CAP.
guess you people became tired of threads like this one?
or is it because I’m a N.I.P.?
