I have just read the following on RyanAir’s website…. Its the final paragraph which got me….

Ryanair brings Stranded XL Passengers Home
Ryanair, Europe’s leading low fares airline, today (12th September 2008), in response to their request, offered the CAA the use of one of its aircraft for the next two weeks in order to secure the return of stranded holidaymakers abandoned by the closure of bankrupt airline XL Airways. Ryanair is using one of its spare 737-800 aircraft to help the authorities in the UK and Ireland provide services for outgoing and returning passengers who have booked with the now defunct airline.

Commenting on the collapse of yet another bankrupt airline, Michael Cawley, Ryanair’s Deputy Chief Executive, said:

“This is proof positive that passengers should not book their holidays with flaky, financially stretched airlines such as XL. Passengers should only book reservations with financially strong airlines such as Ryanair whom they know will be here for the long term. We are pleased to be able to rescue these passengers and facilitate the CAA in their efforts to repatriate them. We strongly advise passengers to be more discerning when they book their holidays and look first at the financial position of the airline with which they book”.

    Thoughts…….

You do have to wonder, don’t you?

For instance, what if Airline A were to ‘encourage’ each of their employees to place a series of small bets on Airline B going bump in the night? Acting as private individuals rather than as employees, naturally.

Airline B’s shareholders could see the odds on its demise shortening, or may see reports to that effect in the media, and might decide to cut their losses – with predictably dire results for Airline B.

Seems (to my twisted and cynical mind at least) like a highly cost-effective means of knackering the opposition.

Sounds like an element of short selling, Short selling itself is not illegal – it is a practice widely used by traders to make money when they think that a share price is likely to fall.

However, it is illegal if a trader then deliberately tries to force the share price lower by spreading false rumours about the company. If caught, traders can be fined or even imprisoned. These trades are known as “trash and cash”. No one has ever been successfully prosecuted for “trash and cash” trades. It is difficult to identify the short sellers as they do not own the stock they sell but borrow it.

To encourage employees of a company to begin rumours may not fall under the same law, but long term could cost them as staff would not be able to keep this quiet..once the rumour was out that this had occured, if people are offered cash for media reports many people wont say no…. and then its a victim of your own game…

If stock market traders get invloved short selling following bets or making their own suggestions, any unstable comapany could fall over night, it all depends on who has the power and trust….

Anyway… back on topic….. I would expect the XL fleet to be returned to leasing companies or used to pay off debt.

My point being, won’t all of the already booked PAX expecting to be leaving EDI this week be delighted to know that Ryanair can so easily afford to ‘donate’ two of their fleet to “help” out with ATOL assurances whilst publically blaming their own cancellations on a shortage of precisely two 737’s…?

In that respect yes, It was only back in July that Ryanair advised cut backs on their winter routes to ensure they were operating to maxium capicity.

Ryanair is to ground more than a third of its Stansted-based fleet and close seven of its European destinations temporarily as it braces for a bleak winter threatened by record oil prices and weak consumer demand.

Michael O’Leary, chief executive, said 15 of the 43 aircraft that fly from Stansted, north of London, would be grounded between November and March, eight more than last winter.

Ryanair says it will cut 150 jobs and ground more than a third of its winter fleet because of high oil prices and landing charges

I have just been watching the video’s online of the mass scale of the XL issue and how its affected so many people..

    This is a prime example….

Also among those affected are a 130-strong choir on tour to Canada from Wales who were booked on Zoom and lost £50,000 when it folded last month, and then re-booked with XL.

I think the current economic climate no-one is really sure what is around the corner which could lead to more airline mergers factoring in a more secure postive long term strategy.
There is also a large element of faith in public spending in the current market, however this year has seen a rise in oversea holidays compared to the high street sales figures against last years figures on average.
The dangers are heightened to any company by the fact that high and rising inflation will prevent the MPC (Monetary Policy Committee) from responding to the downturn by cutting interest rates aggressively. Inflation looks set to rise towards 5% later this year in response to surging food and energy prices, triggering a further string of open letters from the Governor of the Bank of England to the Chancellor.
In response to this, public spending will take a negitive fall and there will be many more casualties along the way in many sectors of the market wether its fuel related expenses inconjunction with public spending.

Its going to be a hard time..

Oh boo-hoo , it amazes me you actually sit and moan about that. It’s still an incredibly cheap deal even with that and some people sit and moan just cause they didn’t get their flight for a quid….

It’s amazing we still have flights this cheap in the current economic climate so enjoy what you have on offer…

🙂 – haha… Im not moaning.. how can I moan at a £10.00 return ticket ? 😉 its humorous! – its Ryan Air policy to charge where ever they can for any any service as we all know.

After spending over £6k on flights, hotels and trips in the last 6 months i wont be moaning about a £8 booking fee!!

    Anyway.. moving on….

Is this the same Ryanair that have cancelled countless Edinburgh flights because Boeing couldn’t deliver 2 new 737’s on time ?

Also Easyjet have offered to help out..

From a marketing point of view for the like of Ryanair, this is great to offer 2 planes for 2 weeks, all the people who get a “ride” home will be gratful and will more than likley give ryanair a go on their next flights…

Also.. The flights home will most likley be all funded via ATOL insurances, so in fact they will be making more money than they do on a normal FR flight…

Ryanair are CONSTANTLY selling flights for £1, and even less, 1p with no taxes. Do we really need a new thread on this anytime they are on offer from LBA?

Fair enough… Just thought i would let you know as for the last month their offers have not really been “cheap” offers…

The offers are from most airports they fly to and from.. not just LBA….

Sometimes its just good to know about a deal which is cheap when the tickets are still avaialbe…….. just thought i would share it with you as some people appreciate it,

about the industry right now with airlines shutting and people saying it’s the end.

    Time for some good news.

Flybe has announced record annual profits before tax of £35.4m and its sales are up by 46% to £535.9m.

    http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Business/Flybe-Airline-Weathers-Rising-Fuel-Cost/Article/200809215095318?lpos=Business_0&lid=ARTICLE_15095318_Flybe%2BAirline%2BWeathers%2BRising%2BFuel%2BCost

    Hi,

After using flybe 2 months ago I can understand why they have made a nice profit, it’s one airline which always never fails to impress me, everything from checkin whether its online or onsite, to the flights ontime to the great cabin crew.. Its alway been a pleasure using them.

Also with been close to 3 airport which they use, I can always get a good deal now and again with them.

Below is just a bit of info regarding their profits.. I think at this moment in time they really need to work on a long term plan to ensure its postivie at the end of 2008.

Well done in the current market..

Flybe announces record annual pre-tax profits
    12 September 2008

Flybe, one of Europe’s largest and most successful regional airline, has announced record financial results for the year ending 31 March 2008, with a 46% increase in turnover to £535.9 million and an underlying profit before tax of £35.4million, representing an improvement of £20m over the previous year.

With global airline losses forecast to exceed $5bn* this year and with many industry players struggling in light of the current economic instability, Flybe continues to go from strength to strength, recording pre-tax earnings of £12.2 million for the first quarter of this year (April – June 2008), an increase of 14% on last year, as well as an 18% increase in passenger figures on the same period last year.

Other notable developments in the last 15 months include:

    – Successful integration of BA Connect
    – Continued growth of the airline, now selling over 190 routes across Europe making Flybe one of Europe’s largest and most successful regional airline
    – Launch of the world’s first aviation ecolabel
    – Continued commitment to deliver a dual-type environmentally sensitive fleet by mid-2009
    – Groundbreaking Loganair franchise deal positioning Flybe as Scotland’s second largest airline

Over the last six years, Flybe has grown from an airline with 41 routes and 1.9 million passengers to what it is today – a nationally recognised brand that flew 7-million passengers last year, with new aircraft orders worth $2bn and now selling to over 190 routes throughout regional Europe today. This has all helped to deliver passenger and turnover growth considerably since 2002.

In a year of outstanding achievement and strategic development, which also delivered an exceptionally strong trading performance despite a challenging economic climate, Flybe Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Jim French says:

“Flybe became one of Europe’s largest regional airlines in 2007/08 in what was a transformational year for the business as we successfully integrated and realised the benefits of the acquisition of BA Connect.

“This year, with passenger volumes of over 7 million being flown on 520 flights a day across a route network of over 190 routes being sold under the Flybe brand, serving the major business and leisure destinations of Europe, Flybe can count itself as one of the major players in the airline industry which is a remarkable achievement.

“With current fuel costs at 24% of total costs, Flybe’s fuel costs represent one of the lowest percentage burdens in the industry. With one of the most fuel-efficient fleets and a passenger base that is less dependent upon discretionary leisure spend, Flybe is continuing to perform strongly in the current difficult environment. In the first quarter’s trading of this year, both revenues and operating profits were significantly higher than in the same period last year.

“The combination of our long-term strategy, focussed management actions and strong cash position gives us a major opportunity to maximise the opportunities that will surely come as the industry enters a period of consolidation.”

haha.. We should not laugh.. but it is funny….

I think thats a great idea to introduce this system… hopefully it will help the passengers who seem to get lost in the terminal or forget they are meant to be boarding a flight when they are in the airside pub!!! :dev2:

Rick, thanks for the detailed post, most appreciated!

It doesn’t look too bad actually. Perhaps the reviews i’ve read are just from bad experiences so the writers make them out to be the worst thing ever. Can’t complain for £5pp I suppose; some people said there were no screens at all!!

As for the upgrade…well i’m not that tall, not too fussed about 2 extra inches on a screen and I certainly won’t be drinking even £50 worth of drink! Cattle class all the way lol.

    Thanks again!

    No problem..

The IFE TV’s are in the 767-300… if you was to use one of the 757 or 737 they just have the ceiling TV’s..

    Enjoy your trip!

    Hi,

I have used the one of the TOM 767-300 this year (same plane both legs)

I upgraded to the Premium package on the outbound which offered loads of leg room (i think 39inch) and 9inch IFE free drinks etc,..

On the return we were in the “cattle” class which was not too bad for a charter “tourist” route with 7inch TV’s and around 33-34 inch seat pitch..

After flying with TOM i would not upgrade to premium at the time of booking due to the cost and very little extras.. Hold off until 7 days before you fly and call them, if they need to fill seats at the front of the plane expect to pay around £50.00 per person compared to the £150.00 upgrade if booked in advance..

All in all…. TOM does what it says on the tin… ok IFE and comfy “ish” for a charter airline…

I have also used First Choice, FCA to Mexico on their 767-300 with the newer interoir and that is worls apart in premium, I used that for both legs and would use again.. (again.. i upgraded last minute for around £50.00

One thing to take into account with TOM and FCA.. If you want to upgrade the IFE onboard it is £5.00 per person, this offers more films and TV plus “PLAY ON DEMAND”, ie like sky plus.. compared to just a rolling video stream..

Summary… TOM good for charter when going on holiday but worlds apart from premium long haul airlines..

I will put some photos onto this thread of the 767-3 TOM cabin if you wish?

    Cheers

A bit more info regarding this…

    http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Boeing-737-Hijacked-On-Internal-Flight-In-Sudan-And-Touches-Down-At-Remote-Desert-Airfield-In-Libya/Article/200808415087687?lpos=World%2BNews_3&lid=ARTICLE_15087687_Boeing%2B737%2BHijacked%2BOn%2BInternal%2BFlight%2BIn%2BSudan%2BAnd%2BTouches%2BDown%2BAt%2BRemote%2BDesert%2BAirfield%2BIn%2BLibya

All 100 passengers on a Sudanese airliner hijacked and taken to a remote airport in the Libyan desert have been released, a Libyan official has said.

Hijacking has been linked to the Sudan Liberation Movement

A Libyan official said: “All of the passengers have left the plane.

“The two hijackers and the crew are still inside. We are continuing to negotiate with them.”

The Sun Air Boeing 737, with some 100 passengers on board, was hijacked shortly after take-off from Darfur’s largest city, Nyala, on Tuesday and was bound for the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.

It was granted permission to land at Libya’s isolated World War II-era Kufra airport after running short of fuel.

The passengers were reportedly given water but no food, and some fainted when the aircraft’s air conditioning failed in the sweltering desert heat.

The pilot told Libyan authorities the hijackers claimed to be members of a branch of the Sudanese Liberation Movement (SLM), a Darfur rebel group.

There were reports that the hijackers had originally been demanding that the plane be refuelled and then flown to Paris.

    More follows …
