As far as I’m concerned you don’t need to start another thread you can have my 2p worth now. I may be gaining a reputation amongst other contributors to this forum as Moggy’s support team but here’s where I disagree with him for once. If it comes to the choice of flying in sponsors colour scheme or grounded in authentic historic colours I’ll go for grounded unless there is only one airworthy example and this is the only way to make flying it a viable proposition as in the case of the Sea Vixen. I would dearly love to see her flying in authentic RN markings.
I cant believe that anyone with a love of aviation would like to see any historic aircraft grounded! The Hunter “Miss Demeanour” would be one to be grounded by your logic for example, remember that although these aircraft are often a memorial/historic relic they still are living working aircraft whether used for personnel enjoyment, airshow/film work whatever and thus don’t always have to stay in the markings they once wore.
Another point also is that an aircraft that may have to spend a season in some ridiculous paint scheme could very well find itself the next year in the position of wearing an entirely authentic service scheme, grounding any aircraft would likely lengthen the odds of it returning to the skies.
An aircraft is for the skies, not for some museum that could never possible replicate the spirit of which these aircraft were once used, if they HAVE to go in a museum then so be it but only if there is no alternative.
my humble opinion anyway,
best regards, steve
Fluffy, what i was trying to say is would the BBMF (or should i say MOD) be willing to take on another Spitfire in flying condition on a cost basis?
All the same it looks very impressive.
Is there a time scale for this Spit project? Does it have the BBMF’s full backing, ie would they want it for the flight?
Mark 12/Arthur,
thanks for the respective replies. Its always hard to tell what kind of condition aircraft are in from just photographs, the aircraft here seem externally to be in a mix of conditions but none seem particularly on their last legs so someone is doing a good job. I must admit i woud rather look around a museum like this than say Hendon because although Hendon’s aircraft may be clean and in a nice warm (albeit dark) hanger, museums like this ahve a certain feel to them. Hendon for example feels so far removed fro the spirit of what once went on their that is astonishing. Monino however from these photographs has a ‘real’ feel to it.
Interesting to note the Tu144 there, i wonder how many were built/survive? More than Concorde or less?
many thanks,
steve hatton
Is this museum open to the public? I cant believe the variety of types on display, are these aircraft just displayed or are they looked after?
Thanks for the photos by the way, great to see.
steve
Yep that caravan is definately an eyesore, if the Pantons are reading this then id be happy to camoflage it for them! 🙂
Thanks for the kind comments ashley. Will have a look for more to post
steve
Thank you for the kind comments, all photographs from 35mm. Most in original format some converted although im trying to remember which 🙂
If you convert a photograph from colour straight to b/w then I think it is often worth making minor adjustments with the nd levels and contrast to get results.
Will post more when i have time 🙂
Why do i have a feeling this will become the “spot the janie in the background” thread? 😉
