The LH A321 is superb, I hope I can bag that sometime. How long will it stay in that scheme?
Hopefully I can ‘bag’ that this summer, when I fly on LH.
I’m not sure about the ETOPS rules, but I’d say it’s about a 10 hour flight. Not quite as far West as said coast on the U.S., but a little further South.
When you were inverted, was there a possibility of crashing into Lady Liberty?
In Olympics case I’ve allways felt it must be really difficult to make it work. Greece is made up of like hundreds of islands, so apart from Athens which is your next hub? None of them are big enough to support large pax operations, yet they all demand air services.
Their 2nd hub would be SKG, but they don’t operate long haul from there, just intra-European and island routes. I’ve always felt that there’s no reason for airlines like Alitalia and Olympic to not be profitable, considering they are both based in tourist mecca’s. Especially in the summer season. I don’t know about the Italian community, but I know the majority of the 10 million Greeks abroad, prefer to fly Olympic for a plethora of reasons, not the least of which is the proverbial language barrier. Olympic’s problem is simple. They have like 10 people doing the job a single person can do. They brought Rod Lynch from BA’s Speedwing team in a few years ago to try and turn the airline around. He tried to consolidate the brass by eliminating much of the the unnecessary personel. Needless to say, they got rid of him because the unions got pissed off and they threatened to strike all the time. Of course they blamed everything on him, claiming that Olympic was in worse shape after he left than it was when he got there. Bunch of idiots. What OA needs is an airline like LH or BA to buy them out, go in there, and kick some ass. They Greece will complain initially, but they did the same thing when they brought in Rehagel to coach the soccer team. God forbid they hire a German. The rest as they say, is history.
The fact that flag carriers like the original SwissAir, Sabena, and now potentially Alitalia and Olympic, can just go by the wayside, is just asinine. Sure, proud airlines such as Pan Am and TWA have suffered similar fates, but there were always big airlines left in their wake (AA, UA, DL, NW, etc.). Although the survival of some of those guys is questionable at the moment, as well. But when a country has a single flag carrier and they disappear, that is just catastrophic. The Italian community world wide is enormous. Who’s going to pick up the slack now for people wanted to fly to and from Italy from long distances? I just think that there should be a little more leniency in terms of being allowed more time to pay back these debts, at the expense of shutting down an airline with so much tradition.
I’m going to Germany for 5 days in June to catch some Confederations Cup action (got tix for Greece’s matches vs. Japan and Mexico 😀 😀 😀 ) and also to visit some of the wife’s relo’s. After that, off to Greece for a month visiting more relo’s (wife’s and mine) perhaps catch a few islands. Prior to coming back home at the end of July, I’d like to hit up Portugal again (was there last summer), or another Euro pitstop for a few days. That’s the bulk of my holidays. I’ve got a couple of weddings coming up in the next month prior to going to Europe, however. One takes me to Montreal and the other to NYC. These trips will assist me in meeting my MP premier exec quota for the year, assuming UAL stays affloat, of course.

I marked the spot
So you just park your car on the shoulder and start shooting?
Are they all the same model?
They retired the last -200 series at the end of March, so they are all -300’s with a mix of ER and non ER models. Last night I thought about something. If these few 767-300’s do get repo’d, I’m assuming they own the -200’s that they have stored in the desert. Wouldn’t an option be to recall the -200’s parked in the desert and use them if needbe? Assuming of course they have not been canabalized at this point.
Another DC-9 gone. How the hell did a DC-9 cormorant the ar$e of a A319?
Because the DC9 is a lowrider.
Does KL routinely send 767’s to LHR?
This 707 is pictured on the LAX-LGW run!
Was there a tech stop on this route?
On a related note, when did Bermuda II come about? Also, what was Bermuda I?
Ironic that they would dump the MD11’s and keep the DC10’s.
Hey,
I got upgraded to UA International Business class. They actually have about 5 different meals to choose from. Domestic First Class is not bad either. Flew ORD-EWR friday in upgraded First, served a nice breakfast with a sandwich, yoghurt, banana and cereal with milk! They still give you nice stuff, just not in the back. Good to have a lot of upgrade vouchers 😉
Tommy, are you a Mileage Plus 1K member that you get all these upgrades?
I know I’m late in this… but filet mignon on a UAL flight? Does every overseas flight come with such good meals? This came after UAL didn’t offer peanuts to passengers on an ORD – MIA flight…
If you flying C cllass on United, Filet Mignon is almost standard as one of the choices. They have a few different ways of preparing, however. In terms of service on the flights, International flights always have better service. ORD-MIA isn’t one of their trunk routes, so if you just got a drink service on that flight, that sounds about right. Them not giving you peanuts, that sounds a bit surprising. Maybe they ran out, or something. UAL’s international economy glass service is pretty good, in my opninion. On LAX-SYD flights I get 2 full meals (which are usually pretty good), a box snack in between and unlimited booze. That’s all I need.
Since we’re still on the subject, I think business class on intra-European flights pretty much sucks. The food and service is obviously better, but the seats are the same. Those 2-3 conversion seats are the same crap from the cattle class. At least on business class flights within the U.S., I get bona fide 2-2 business class seats. I don’t know any U.S. domestic carrier that has those coversion deals, unless someone can enlighten me.
