Judging by the smoke there, I’d have to say it was landing.

RE: US to cut miliatary aid to Taiwan if China Airlines gets 330

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-08-02 AT 09:14 AM (GMT)]I wouldn’t go as far as saying the U.S. would be turning their back on Europe. If they were going to do that, they should have done so before ‘Nam, in attempting to bail out the French for seemingly the thousandth time. This whole thing has nothing to do with Europe, it has to do with the U.S. and Taiwan. I wouldn’t go to the “spoiled child” card, Kev. I’d go more to the, “We’ve been protecting you from Communist China since day 1,” card. Is this “calling your bluff” tactic by the U.S. fair, probably not. However, it’s just predatory capitalism. BA/AA do it all the time, just to use an example. Not in the same manner, but predatory nonetheless. That’s the bottom line. Use whatever means necessary in order to make the sale and make a profit.

I agree with Monster, SYD is fantastic. Right off General Holmes Drive, going eastbound, there’s a turnoff, you go by the old Tower and there is a beach. Then you walk right up next to runway 34L/16R. I took a few pictures, I’ll scan them when I get back to L.A.

As bad as that livery is, it looks great on that aircraft! I don’t know what it is about the 777, but even AirFrance’s c/s looks good on it.

The Austrian Group owns 99% of Lauda Air, Niki Lauda owns the other 1%. There was an article on Austrian in Airlinerworld a few months ago. That’s where I get this info.

    RE: I Give Up !!!

Wow, I’ve been gone a week and a half, and this thread is still going. I picked up the magazine when I was in London and read the article, LOL, what a joke. They basically show the person kneeling down on one knee, stepping on the flushing mechanism with his other foot, and simultaneously blowing the smoke in the toilet bowl. First of all, how many airliners have foot flushers? None that I’ve ridden on and I’ve ridden on quite a few. Secondly, I don’t know that anybody would want to stick their face into a toilet bowl(unless vomitting), let alone a vacuum toilet. The vacuum toilet would likely suck your nosehairs right out!

That’s right, CAL has the right to choose the A330 as they apparantly have…..and get military aid reduced as a result. That’s leverage for you.

    RE: Pic of the day.

The MD11 WAS NEVER a threat to the 747 and was never going to be to the 777 either. The MD11 was going nowhere long before Boeing bought Douglas. It’s no wonder American got rid of them no less than 10 years after they bought them, and replaced them with 777’s. Their performance was a disappointment from the start. In fact, they had to fine tune it several times after roll-out, but performance was still disappointing. Because of all this, is why it was pretty much relegated to the Cargo Sector. Most passenger carriers operating the MD11 today, either operate the 777, 747 or both along with with it. I do like the MD11, would like to see it continue to operate as a passenger plane. However, as Serendib has shown, the MD11 was not the forefront of the Douglas acquisition, it was mainly military.

    RE: JMC and their 330’s

    Mongu,

CRJ’s are a 2×2 seating arrangement, so depending on your preference, it really doesn’t matter. You’re going to be next to an aisle or a window either way. I’ve flown on a CRJ once, from JFK to IAD, about an hour or so flight, so I took the window. If I’m flying longer than 2 hours, I prefer the aisle, so I can get up whenever I want without bothering anybody (as I tend to do rather often when consuming alcohol and water simultaneously). As far as the A32S’s go, LH usually puts that on itineraries. The plane could change. I just flew them this last week, as a matter of fact. LHR-MUC/MUC-ATH. Then ATH-FRA/FRA-AMS. In that order, A321/A320/A300-600/A320. Both the original A320 flights were supposed to be A321’s, then wound up changing. On those flights, I suggest the emergency exit rows. No entertainment, however, not even audio, even on the A300-600’s. And you guys criticize U.S. carriers about ‘service.’

The 777 was actually ETOPS 180 minute certified right off the line, the first not having to ‘earn it,’ so to speak.

    RE: SIA keeping options open!

Ironic how this same subject showed up on 2 different threads, and I basically addressed every single one of those questions in the other one. Bus terminal is correct, JA, as I flew in and out of there a week and a half ago. They’re saying the current flow of passengers is over its quota? Try having their whole system shut down, at 6:00 a.m., with flights to Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and whatever other destination they serve from Sydney, waiting to take off, nobody has their boarding passes, and the cue is just growing outside the bus terminal(and it was damn cold too, by my standards at least).

RE: Singapore Airlines preparing to enter Australian domestic market

They better hurry. Currently, Virgin is using the Express terminals in SYD and MEL which, relatively speaking, are rather lousy. From what they advertise, they are “currently looking to acquire more terminal space,” errrrrrr, get ahold of Ansett’s old gates, I would imagine. What the hold up is, I don’t know. If this does happen, it certainly would make things very intersting, Down Under, on several fronts. Several qestions arise, aside from terminal space. With SIA owning nearly half of Virgin Atlantic, why compete with Virgin Blue? Will this be the ‘new’ Star connection in Australia? If so, what will become of UA/DJ’s recent codeshare announcement which was announced nearly 2 months ago, yet nothing has even surfaced inidicating it (a few UA people I talked to over the phone didn’t even know anything about it)? Will 3 domestic airlines be able to co-exist in Australia? Why not just re-brand the Ansett name, or retain some part of it, like the logo, for example? With the exception of the 762’s, why not just use the former Ansett narrowbodies?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-07-02 AT 04:47 AM (GMT)]A couple of questions: 1) When did the A340-500 get rolled out ,just now? I thought only the -600 was out and about. 2) What is the Connexion 737-400 supposed to be?

I wasn’t aware that the French gov’t caused the crash of the Tu-144 in 73. Did the Russian gov’t cause the Air France Concorde to crash in 2000 as payback?
