    Not that anyone at Key is paying attention, but the New Posts button doesn’t seem to be working. Several of the forums say there is a new post, but I never see anything when I click on the link to be taken to the newest posts.

    In its latest attempt to get some attention, Gillespie has announced that TIGHAR will start a series of podcasts in April about all of their “expeditions” to Nikumaroro Island to “solve” the Amelia Earhart mystery. These will apparently be free, at least at first, which is unusual for TIGHAR.

    Nothing said about whether independent fact-checking will be allowed …

    Mark – PM sent (I THINK that feature works in here …) Pretty much everything at TIGHAR has “gone dark,” with the global pandemic a ready excuse for “staying safe” and all that stuff. There have been NO developments on:

    • The Glenn Miller Project, nothing at all since September 2019. Gillespie’s not actively raising money for it;
    • Finding Amelia, The True Story of the Earhart Electra book. Gillespie at one point said he’d have it finished by Christmas 2020, then changed it to Christmas 2021, if he could raise the $50,000 or so he said he needed to finish writing it. Other than that, the Literary Guild II donors are left holding empty promises;
    • The Earhart Project, nothing substantive, just random speculations about various bits of stuff on the forums, and the occasional brutal smackdown of any outsider who dares to question the party line. Gillespie has declined to follow up in any substantive way with solid information that 2-2-V-1, the sheet of aircraft aluminum found on the island, is from a wartime C-47 crash on another island. As noted above, the world is still breathlessly waiting “final reports” on a number of things TIGHAR has raised money to pursue, or has farmed out for pro-bono work.
    • Project Midnight Ghost, where Gillespie postulates that Nungesser and Coli crashed in Newfoundland while trying to be the first across the Atlantic, likewise appears dead. No forum postings since 2017, although Gillespie said a year or so ago that substantial activity was looming and to “stay tuned.”

    Not bad for the $8.66 million he’s spent since 2000, eh?

    I’m not surprised by that. Funny things can happen to those who critique TIGHAR openly and extensively, the WIX incident comes to mind, as does my own treatment in TIGHAR’s forums there at the end.

    Gillespie in the past had applied an extremely heavy hand to anything critical in TIGHAR’s forums, on its Facebook page or in his blog. The forums are of course now members only, and he seems to have eased up a little on the Facebook page. Maybe the IRS audit in 2018 had something to do with that, who knows? He’s never publicly discussed it.

    I don’t know how it works in the UK, but in the US many companies will sell you an “umbrella” policy which is basically excess liability coverage, at $1 million, for a fairly small premium. The coverage limits are generally very broad.

    Something I found today, when trying to find an old post by looking in my Forum Activity on my Profile page – it doesn’t work. You get a 502 Bad Gateway error.

    And THAT is something that frequently happens when the back room boys tell you, “Oh, we’ll just import everything over into the new system, you won’t even notice the change, it’ll all be there.” Which was always my cue to make PAPER backups of all the really important stuff …

    Businesses loveeeeeeeeeeeeee Direct Deposit because they rely on people’s innate inability to keep track of things long term.

    Which means that, yes, you’ll keep paying for it until you notice you don’t want it anymore. Which can be years. That’s also why businesses loveeeeeeeeeeeeee autorenewal. They can sponge off you for months or years because the money gets sucked out of your bank account automatically, no human hand involved.

    Sigh … note to Key … when there’s a 30-60 second lag before anything happens when you hit the Post button, and you think What the hell??? and hit Post again, you’re going to get a lot of double posts.

    On the other hand, that’s a good way to boost your forums total post count.

    Sadly, taking volunteers and their efforts for granted has become all too common in this era, when everything is treated as a dollars and cents transaction and if it can’t be “monetized” it must not be worth much.

    £2M to fix the old gal … heck, TIGHAR’s spent more than that looking for Amelia Earhart. About $8 million US more. What a shame.

    TIGHAR’s bouncing-ball membership numbers just keep getting … bouncier! Now that we have the 2017 numbers (finally) and 2018, here’s an update (in all cases the ‘volunteer’ line from the IRS forms:

    • 2009 – 600
    • 2010 – 600
    • 2011 – 600
    • 2012 – 1,100 No explanation for this 500 member jump.
    • 2013 – 1,000
    • 2014 – 1,000
    • 2015 – 1,000
    • 2016 – 1,000
    • 2017 – 0  Nope, not making this up. Beyond odd.
    • 2018 – 200

    At the end of the day, though, the trend seems to be going down. Rather steeply.
