Poor old USAF. They are getting the third best choice foisted on them.
The Chinook is a great heavylift helicopter, but if you want to insert/extract SF and recover downed aircrew, the Chinook is a poor option. Too big, too noisy, and too slow.
Which is, reportedly, exactly what the USAF thought.
Musashi.
As part of Tranche 2. Tranche 2’s overall size has increased by 24 aircraft. Britain’s share remains unchanged, though the line positions of RAF aircraft have done.
Moreover, 232 aircraft is the number required to support seven frontline squadrons through to OSD. That is hardly ‘too many’. And with a UPC of £40 m (acknowledged by the IPT) the 88 aircraft in Tranche 3 represent a bargain for the UK taxpayer.
Well done Singapore!
It must have been very hard to resist the pressure to order the T-6 and to select the best aircraft.
The Saudi aircraft are additional to the 144 aircraft on order (55 T1, 89 T2), they are merely displacing some of the RAF’s early T2 jets to the end of the Tranche, and may mean that all RAF T2 aircraft are Block 10s and 15s, with no Block 8s.
The MiG-33 and -35 designations have both been used several times. The last MiG-33 was an export version of the MiG-29ME. It was also applied to the single-seat design that gave birth to the FC-1.
Robban,
You absolute Star!
That 2111-4 is just so sexy!
Hey knowledgeable Gripen dudes….
Does anyone have GOOD drawings of the Saab Gripen’s forerunners?
I know they’re in the Aerofax book, but my copy is 50 miles away!
Can anyone scan and post pics of the 2108 and the 2111-4 (pages 10-11)….?
HELP! Please.
I’m fading fast
Nice drawing of a production Gripen, but I need the 2108 and the 2111-4
I’m not.
If only someone had been as helpful with my Gripen request……
Thanks, saw those, but there are GOOD drawings in the book.
