Pilot was Sgt T. Davis (Service Number 590709)

Maybe… A big maybe……

K9897 54 Sqn Hornchurch Cat C. Patrol. Undershot & crashed into Army hut on edge of aerodrome (Hornchurch) on 4.7.39, Sgt T. Davis (Service Number 590709).

If you blow the picture up, the serial looks like P233? to be, so probably P2332

I was listerning on the t’interweb, with a not very good earpiece (note to self – Buy a new one).. And didn’t catch what they were flying? Was it an Avenger or Firefly or something esle?

I have not the time to go through all these emails, so if this point has been amde already then I appologise.. But surely it is easier, and there are enough Numbers from 1 to Infinity to ensure that if any Sqn’s were in ‘disgrace’ that they were never ever reformed again and allowed to disband in the many ‘defence reviews’ since then to make this ‘colour use’ irrelevant in the first place!

One of my junior school teachers shot one down with AA, dunno if she got a medal for it, but she used to mention it a lot.

To test the theory.. How good was her aim with either:

Chalk
Chalk Board Duster
Anything else to hand..

When you were naughty? Did she include an element of deflection in her aiming?

Lt Roderick John Chisholm (pilot) was killed whilst flying in a DH9 (serial unknown) of 218 Sqn on 14 May 1918. He was flying with Lt Ambrose Godfrey Horneck Lane (pilot) (also 218 Sqn) who died of injuries on 15th May 1918. Both were serving on the western front and are buried at Dunkirk, France.

‘killed whilst flying’ implies an accident which may not have been an operational flight (training or air test etc) the fact both are listed as pilots implies to me the latter…

It is not V6846, it is ex Canadian Built and BoB veteran P5202 – See page 19 of Hurricane R4118 by Peter Vacher..

He found the number on some part of the airframe
