On a non-aircraft front – Much better organised than last year (talking to AM marketing manager – she said they learnt a lot from last year as well) and due to the sit down buffet – I actually got some food this year! – No gannets taking all the best finger food as soon as it came out ‘aka last year’!

Isn’t there some quote from a Irish (RAF) Bomber Pilot over the explosions and fires of Berlin during a bombing raid.. Along the lines of

“Isn’t Mr. de Valera doing a grand job keeping us all out of this mess!”

Hope you don’t mind me “Jumping in”, but from above book…

X4410 1126 FF 9-9-40, 24 MU 10-9-40, 72Sqn 17-9-40, Sht/Dwn by Bf109 nr Ashford kent, P/O Holland aban a/c kld 20-9-40.

A quick question of my own, if I may…

Could someone tell me what the “Code” numbers that appear in this book,directly AFTER the reg’ number represents (The 1126, in this case. I’ve not managed to work that one out yet)? :confused:

FF = First Flown
MU = Maintenance Unit

Supermaire Spitfire Mk 1 X4410 of 72 Sqn, Patrol, Shot down in combat over Canterbury, 20.9.40 (10:20), P/O Dennis Fredrick Holland (77269) badly wounded, and died of his wounds same day. Buried Chaddleworth Churchyard, Berkshire

I have two locations for this aircraft:

Crashed near Ashford, Kent
Crashed Stiff Street, Sittingbourne, Kent

Anyone with correct location?

I dont know if any of you guys ever saw one, they were painted in outrageous colour schemes to be clearly visible, I only ever saw one and it was a Liberator painted bright yellow with black spots, I was wondering if the B 17s units also used these unusual aircraft.

My Dad remembers seeing that one as well (at the time)

I think it was the Assembly Ship of the B-24 491st BG

I think I looked it up once – A picture is it ins in the Mighty Eighth by Freeman – I think it is called Grumper or something

Percival P.34 Proctor Mk. III G-AGLJ (Constructed in 1943 by F Hills And Sons Ltd, C/N H.406) (ex RAF LZ599). Registered 25.8.1944 (another source says 30.04.46) , missing in English Channel 1.4.1951

“Channel Search for Missing Aircraft”

The search continued yesterday for the Percival Proctor aircraft reported missing on Sunday while on a flight from Southend to Le Touquet. The pilot was Mr. Frank Edgar Miller, 25 a former R.A.F pilot of Barkingside, Essex, and his passengers were Mr. Peter Miller, 23, his brother of Forest Lane, Chigwell, and Mr. John Smith 24 of Cranbrook Road Illford”
