Found it incident of Fire at RAF Northolt was Thursday January 6th 1955

It caught fire during ground check at RAF Northolt and an American airman was killed – Two other men jumped clear, but man who died was overcome by fumes. No name provides in News report in The Times, Friday, Jan 07, 1955; pg. 5; Issue 53133; col C

“Ensign William Forbes was in the plane on Dec. 28, 1944, when the Wildcat’s engine unexpectedly quit during a take-off run in a qualification training exercise for the U.S. Navy. A restart attempt failed and the plane rolled over the bow of the ship, sinking into Lake Michigan, according to Navy records.”

It seems remarkable that a ‘celebrity’ relatively late survivor could slip from the records so easily.

Not really about this time (late 1950s) various Mk XVI’s (most unidentified) are described in Air Britain spotting logs as being on various Station dumps etc
