Well, the only threat to the Iraqi people to get killed in large numbers is chemical weapons in Saddam’s hands.
Secondly, peacekeepers have never been succesfull, unless all parties involved agree that there is a need to them. History is full of examples, Srebrenica just to name one.

France isn’t really in NATO anyway. You can thank De Gaulle for that 😉

Geforce,
It amazes me how easy you talk about the US supply in WWI and WWII: what do expect of them: to sned their sons and daughters to die each and every time some Europeans screw things up here? You should know better.
And Turkey will get help if it`s under attack, but at this moment, Iraq is not a real threat.
Yeah, I guess Turkey will be really gratefull that Patriots will arrive in Turkey two weeks after it has come under a SCUD attack, especially since it will take a few weeks more to deploy the batteries. Some help.
And if Turkey would have been a real ally, they wouldn`t have placed troops in Cyprus. Nice ally we have.
While in no way trying to condone the Turkish presence in Cyprus, things are a little different than the picture being painted here. At the time, Greece was governed by a military junta. The large Turkish minority in Cyprus was oppresed and discriminated against, and thus Turkey felt compelled to intervene. The wordl is not so black and white, remember Geforce?
And not only France and Belgium, JJ, also the Netherlands Norway, Sweden, Spain, Italy, all these countries who signed that pathetic letter a couple of weeks ago (or wanted to sign, but were not invited as was the case with the Netherlands).
I have no clue what you mean with this.
And we are forgetting Russia – though not a member of NATO – but supporter of the Franco-German peace plan. Russia has helped the US in the 9/11 aftermath, and so did Germany and France. But there has to be a limit.
Ofcourse there is: the Russians have their own interests to look after: oil, influence in the Middle East (the exact same reasons France is presenting their alternative and blocking help to Turkey).
Icarus,
Spain, Italy and the rest all have the RIGHT to act as they see fit, but the way they did it undermined the EU. Whether they like it or not, Europe is trying to forge a common policy. At the very least, they should have consulted their EU allies.
I don’t remember France and Germany consulting with their allies: heck, the Dutch PM had to read in the papers that Germany and France made this lunatic proposal. Pot to kettle…
Instead they purposely kept the ‘letter’ secret from the EU. They cannot on one hand accept billions in EU (mostly German) funding and not at the very least inform their benefactors of their actions. Whether they like it not, (especially Spain) Germany and the EU in general has spent alot of money modernizing their countries and what they did was shameful.
And so did they spend a lot of money on Greece… I don’t see how the fact that Spain is a beneficiary means that they cannot oppose Germany and France. After all, weren’t you saying that Europe owes nothing to the US, even after they saved our a**es in WWI and WWII and helped rebuild Europe…
Shalom,
Jonathan

RE: SCREW NATO — Old Europe responds
It is indeed about principles, Geforce: the principle to defend an ally. Turkey is an ally, it has officially asked for help in the defence of their country. It’s got nothing to do with NATO being a world police force.
And what you said about US action in WWII is only partially true: the US were already delivering weapons the the UK, thus helping them in the war effort. I don’t see how US help in WWII has anything to do with this anyway: if there is anything to learn for WWII, it is that a) appeasement doesn’t work nd that b) one must not act too late, not in fighting a threat and not in helping allies (well, in that sense France and Belgium do have something in common with the France and Belgium of 1940…).

RE: SCREW NATO — Old Europe responds
So if the US attacks Iraq unilaterally, the European countries (well, only Germany, France and Belgium) should just let Iraq take revenge on Turkey, even though they could have helped? I think that is a disgusting POV. Delivering Patriots is not the same as bombing Baghdad. It seems you skipped over all the other points, by the way. Since when do Belgium, France and Germany decide what the common EU foreign policy should look like? By what right?
Icarus,
Greece is also a net receiver of EU money, the biggest beneficiary after Spain (4.2 Bn Euros in 2000). By your logic, Greece has no right to speak either…
