The ‘Memphis Belle’ was the first war film I ever saw with the characters represented by actors actually the age of those that served and died, and not John Wayne or others who where clearly in their late thirties or fourties.
For me it was a refreshing departure from the old hacknied(sp) war films ‘of old’, where mature adults played the parts of youths.
Just my two pennies worth.
Yes please. Would love to see ‘Airshow World’ on dvd. I’ve got a couple of episodes on vhs and they’re getting a bit ropey!
Gutersloh and other BFG sites with WWII history.
Does anybody have any information regarding 17 Base Vehicle Depot, Ayrshire Barracks, Monchengladbach which was reputedly a Luftwaffe station before and during WWII. (I lived nearby when I was a kid.) Unfortuantely the only information I can gleen from trawling the net is that it was called Lufthorst Neersen/Wickrath.
Any one have any suggestions or info?

Legends-The best by far
I feel I must come down firmly in the ‘Legends’ fan category.
After hearing and reading so much about ‘Flying Legends’ it went to the top of my ‘once in a lifetime list’. So in Summer 2003 ‘The Mutant Family’ were dragged across the ‘Pond’ for ‘the’ show. Unbelievable! The show opened with an 11 Spitfire tail chase, warranted a group of 5 and another of 6…… and finally a ‘Balbo’ of IIRC 27 aircraft to end the show! Remarkable!
I was so impressed I came back in 2004 and 2005! In 2006 I was involved in some airshow stuff of my own in Canada and the US and although great fun left me in serious withdrawl for more ‘Legends’. Guess what, I’ll be back in 2007!
The atmosphere at Duxford is one major factor, the countryside gives the impression of a performance in a big country park and the displays are second to none. In the US there are big shows with lots of ‘aviation exotica’ but the performances are often limited to aircraft flying in a large race track and in a gaggle not formation. (Ed Shipley, Jim Beasely and Steve Hinton excepted!)
Legends definitely ‘does it’ for me!
Let the flaming begin! Or should that be continue?

Septic, again, many thanks. It’s all good ‘intelligence’!!

Well, if I can’t park the MG in front of the pub I’m not bringing it over! :p
Thanks for the photo of the ‘Jackdaw’. Definitely whets the appetite. Only six months and how many days before I’ll be there……! I’m not counting the days, really I’m not.
Septic, thanks for the link to what is a beautiful series of photographs. I hope the ‘Mutant’ family are as lucky with the weather as you were. I must do some research on Elham (B+Bs, pubs etc).
The ‘Red Lion’ in Snargate (close to the Brenzett Aviation Museum) which has made it into the 2007 Good Beer Guide and is in their National Inventory of historical interiors, will be sqeezed into ‘the tour’. Good job Mrs.Mutant, as a Canadian ‘born and bred’, is still happy driving in the UK (wrong side of the road and all that!).;)
My cd-rom ‘Drive the Battle of Britain’ arrived in the mail this morning allowing me the opportunity to listen to it on the way to work. I’m very impressed. An excellent production! A blend of music, narration and radio reports from the period. Brilliant!
Creaking Door, hello.
The cd-rom is, I believe, an audio disc so it will be quite handy to play in the car as we drive around, sit in traffic, experience grid-lock Kentish style.
I am originally from the UK and visit as often as possible, normally once a year.
Even though I do have recent experience of driving in the UK, particularly the South, I still tend to be a little over ambitious in planning my ‘road trips’ and forget how long it takes to get a relatively short distance whether on motorways or A/B roads. Thanks for the warning!

“Deafening silence……..”
Well, guess what?
After trawling the web with various combinations of ‘Battle of Britain’ Road tour, ‘Battle of Britain Trail’ etc.etc., I finally discovered what I was looking for. Ain’t ‘Google’ a wonderful thing!
The cd-rom is titled ‘Drive The Battle of Britain’ and is available from the Folkstone and Shepway Tourist Office for a fee of 2.99 Pounds. I have also figured out co-ordinates for at least one significant hostelry, ‘The Jackdaw’ at Dutton, which is also in the 2007 ‘Good Beer Guide’!!! Way hey! Roll on July!
The museum in Dumfries is underated, possibly due to it’s remote location! (Not down south that is!!;) ) I last visited the museum in 2004 while on vacation from Canada and found the museum not only has a great collection of static aircraft exhibits, but an incredible archive and collection of aviation artifacts on display within the restored ‘control tower’.
Somewhat co-incidentally, as a student at boarding school in Ipswich during the 1970s, I would hike, ‘hitch’ or cycle out to RAF Woodbridge/Bentwaters whenever I could. You can imagine my suprise, while at Dumfries in 2004, to be re-aquainted with the F-111 escape pod which I used to sit in as a kid! Believe it or not the AFRRES HH-53s would dump the ‘pod’ on the heathland between the main road and the fence of what I presumed was the RAF Woodbridge bomb dump! What’s a fifteen year old lad to do but to climb in!
Bare bones itinerary for July 2007:
‘Legends’ 7-8th, Breighton 15th, Walney 28th.
What to do the weekend of the 21-22nd?
As my family is ‘oop noorth’ (Cumbria- nearly Scotland) you can consider yourself excused transport duty!
Now you’re talking!! 🙂
(Have to consult the missus first though!!) :dev2:
Yep, you guessed it. I’ve just figured out the smilies!
Keithjs,
Thanks for that.
I have looked at former ‘Flying Legend’ weekends and in 2001 the dates were 7-8 July with RIAT the next weekend. At a guess, it should follow the same dates in 2007.
The B+B is booked, but I’m holding off booking the flights for a little longer, just in case!
Thanks for the ‘Heads Up’!
Should be an interesting documentary.
Flex297,
I must agree with your comment. The excuse that the fragile democratic government of Lebanon failing to curb the activities of a domestic terrorist organisation is an excuse for attack/invasion can be compared to the UK/Eire and the IRA. Using the same logic as Israel what should have been the consequences of The Guilford/Birmngham pub bombings, Harrods and Manchester? Would we be looking at air strikes on Dublin and Shannon airports and wholesale destruction of the Irish infrastructure?
Oh, and this whole thing kicked off because of a number of kidnappings. Israel has kidnapped and assasinated non-Israeli nationals in other sovereign countries with impunity with little or no comment and definitely little retaliation when it has involved ‘western powers’. Remember, Israel can and does operate under it’s own set of rules.
