sjwmoore,
Do you have any pics or knowledge of the HP Hastings that was on the dump at the east end of Wildenrath during the late Seventies?
Brilliant.
“I can see my house from here….”
I lived in JHQ for 8yrs as a kid and would frequently go ‘spotting’ at RAF Wildenrath.
Happy times!
Thanks for posting.
A ‘Custer Channel Wing’ is on display at the MAAM (Mid-Atlantic Air Museum) in Pensylvania.

The DHC-2T pic is still Toronto Harbour! The photo is taken at the seaplane ramp at the east side of Toronto Island Airport. DHC would fly the aircraft from the plant at Downsview and convert them from land to seaplanes in a nearby hangar.
I was a Forces Brat in Germany 1970-80 and cycled on, off and all over both RAF Bruggen and Wildenrath ‘plane spotting’ with total impunity. Great pics! Any more?
So, what happened to the Hastings dumped at RAF Wildenrath about 1986-87?
Does any one know it’s history.
Any form of aviation TV would be good on this side of ‘The Pond’. Up until 2002 in Canada/US we had ‘Speedvision’ which amongst cars/bikes/motor racing also had a good chunk of aviation until it was taken over by Murdochs ….ing FOX network and became NASCAR, NASCAR,NASCAR. Get the picture?
Sadly, even paying the extra to have a few digital cable channels including the US version of Discovery Wings didn’t work! It is now re-named….wait for it…..(insert fanfare here)….’THE MILITARY CHANNEL!!!!’ You can imagine what that is like.
Good luck with the channel in the UK. If it works, any chance of getting the Canadian cable tv company Alliance/Atlantis to carry it?
Pic of Turbo-Beaver is at the Float Plane dock at Toronto Harbour,in pre-CN Tower/Skydome days.
I think the last ‘Tutor’ rolled off the production line in 1966. The Canadian Governement are pondering replacing the ‘Tutors’ with a Pilatus product! There is a grass roots campaign to have the replacement aircraft still be a jet, the Hawk 100, I think. Last year, at the Canadian Intl. Airshow, British Aerospace placed a full page colour ‘Ad’ in the airshow programme for a Snowbirds replacement with a formation of 9 Hawks all in the ‘Snowbirds’ colours. Nicely done!
A long-shot, I know, but does anybody know about the HP Hastings that was on the dump at the east end of the runway at RAF Wildenrath in the late 1970s (77-78 I think). As a forces brat from a nearby camp, I would cycle on and around the base, very rarely getting challenged…..never actally! The dump was right by the Bloodhound dispersals.
Ouch!
That’s a bit of an investment! 😀
Melvyn,
Thanks for the info.
What is the book about making the film actually called? Is it a ‘historical perspective’ or is it a promotional booklet put out at the time the film was released?
Stormbird262,
Sorry mate, no pics!
Leornato,
No offence taken, still dusting myself off though. 😀
My sources of D.Healey’s quote was incorrect. It is from a DD Video production ‘TSR-2 The Untold Story’. In the video he is interviewed and barefacedly(sp) blames the Conservatives for the aircrafts demise, even though they weren’t in government at the time and denies, completely any involvement in the destruction of the airframes, plans, hardware etc following cancellation.
Leornato,
The Hon.D.Healey was appointed as Defence Secretary in Harold Wilson Labour Government and stayed in said position until Ted Heath became P.M. in 1970. In 1973 Harold Wilson appointed Mr.Healey to the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer(sp). :p
