Does that put the Wright brothers in second place then? What was all the fuss about last December 17th? 😀
It had a reactor on board but this had nothing to do with providing propulsion, it was just a test to see if an aircraft could fly with a nuclear reactor aboard and not kill the crew!
Too busy to write more, but I am sure plenty of others out there have the details!
and there was the Hiram Maxim steam-powered monster too. . .
Fortunately restricted to the ground by rails.
Try looking up “vacillating”!

Sorry to see you go, Steve.
It is a terrible shame that such a fantastic resource provided by Key Publications has been so thoroughly abused.
Fortunately there is one Forum left that has so far not been taken over by these idiots, I dare not even say which, but that’s where I am going!
I hope that sanity will soon return to this and the other Forums that have been hijacked by young, stupid anarchists.
April 12, 1933, was the first flight date of a Travel Air 2000 powered by a 150 hp Besler V-2 steam turbine driving a 2-blade tractor propeller (some sources say it had a Besler 2-cylinder double-actine Vee engine, operating on a boiler pressure of 1200 psi).
Extract from my personal “First Flights” database.
That is the only steam-powered aircraft to actually fly that I have come across, but I would very much like to know if there were any others!
Nice airport on take-off a month ago – and I didn’t ask permission! Perhaps I should have, but at least there was no question of using flash! SN Brussels aircraft.

I had the Powles flight in mind when I quoted Quill, but it seems to me that the instrumentation at Farnborough would have provided more credible results than any at Hong Kong. Unfortunately my copy of AM with the article in it is buried too deeply in my cellar to find at 2 o’clock in the morning, so it would be good to have some more details, atc pal.
That’s why I wrote “most believable”, since Jeffrey Quill of all people ought to know!
Aha, but I don’t think I have a webspace, is that in other words a personal Web site?
(Sorry, folks, this should I suppose be a PM to Robbo, but on the other hand perhaps I am not the only one who is still learning how to handle this site!)
JDK, like the Crusader that managed to take off with its wings folded?

How do you guys get bigger/more highly resolved photos that I can, within the 100k limit on this Forum? I am using Photoshop 7, 72 dpi, around 600 pixels is as much as I can get to stay within 100k.
I am alluding to self control, which is essential whatever your age or which century you live in!
I believe you are 12 years old, in which case you should count it as a privilege to be able to correspond in a responsible manner with others who are interested in aviation.
Absolutely agree wys
