While you are on the Barracuda theme,I saw when I was 13/14 years old (1955)about four aircraft circle RAF Hednesford ,I was about a mile and a half away.My firend and I thought they were Fairey Battles but later found out this was impossible so we then thought Barracuda, possibly from Fradley near Lichfield? Is this possible?
Are they inches or Centimetres? From the colouring and number of flange holes I would say from a steam system.
The Very pistol fitted in a bayonet fitting above the Flt Engs panel(MK1 & 2)
Back to the Romanians
Anyone on this forum old enough to have been in the UK when the Hungarian uprising started? For those that were not the UK decided to invite in all the hungarians who managed to cross the border/escape before the Soviets closed it .Lots of them ended up living near me at an old RAF base(Hednesford). Now as they were not prisoners they were allowed to roam about and given money for spends etc.,
All very good but lots of them were thieves and crooks who got out and they continued were they had left off back home Anything that was not nailed down was taken including washing from clothes lines and people started locking and bolting thier doors. This is just an example you understand ,I am not implying all Romanians are the same but wait and see!!!

Think about it.
When the government privatised the Elect industry they probably new that emmisions would be tightened up in the near future and now most of those big coal fired power plants have had to retrofit flue gas cleaning at great expense and so up goes the price per KWH.I started in one of those large coal fired plants in 1968 after I left the RAF.During the training we did I recall that some critical part of the boiler would probably last a good 40 years and thats about now so should any safety issue aride the private company will not hesitate to shut it down. Now most of the remaining big coal fireds are all about that age so watch this space as they say!!
For those interested the bit of the boiler I was refering to was the boiler drum,a storage for water and steam seperation ,usually about 4 inchs thick and vulnerable to metal creep and stress due to daily temperature swings!!!

Licence fee
Working abroad a lot I am always amused by the locals reactions when I tell them that in the UK you have to have a licence to own a TV!!More laughter follows when I tell them about the little vans going round searching for licence dodgers!! I do like to watch news programmes but having to suffer BBC world news (a seperate company from the real BBC)and its elitist commercials is painful!Al Jazeera is much better!
