I know. The reason I said “looking at the Burkes”, is that with VLS, hangar, and tail they are at their very limit, hence my statement that a vessel with full and equal dual-task AAW and ASW capability would probably need 11.000ts (just my estimate).
The Eurodesigns might or might not be a more modern design, in any case their packaging doesn’t provide anywhere near the capabilities of a Burke. And there’s nothing wrong with that, just saying don’t try to squeeze dual-task into a too small hull. A Daring or Horizon hull is fully booked with just ONE mission weapon system.
@ philbob: Ok, then I mistook the missile battery aft in your second Type 46 drawing for an Aster battery. You might want to distribute CAMM between a forward and a aft magazine. And use the forward Sylver VLS also for Exocet III (I think that version is VLS compatible), and the deck mounted launcher for MILAS.
Sorry Distiller I miss understood your post. I think with 45/horizon the idea is to be AAW only, 45 wasn’t even going to get bow mounted sonar untill senior offcers expressed their concern and a bow mounted MFS was added to the design in 2001 for self defence.

@90infirst I like your rafted diesel suggestion (if its what i think it is as being the diesel gennie’s are lifted off the ground to decrease vibration?)
spot on!
Wanshan has proved me wrong!
Spearfish 54km at low spead 23km at max, wire guided with active terminal homing can’t find any figure for what low speed is! I would guess the answer is no.
Hi distiller, which flight of ab weighs in at 11,000t? Fl 11A maxs at 9217t 509ft long 59 wide.
Type 45 500 long 69 wide 8100t max (give or take a few) lighter weight is surely more modern design? (this is NOT an inflamatory statment)
Wouldn’t using the T45 IEP system be best for C1 I believe it has diesel generators for low speed propulsion?
BTW Phil I really like that FSC 2X ASW concept for the C1 role.
If it did it would have two stack one each for the MT30 gas turbines. Phils drawing shows one so I guess the rest of the propulsive/hotel/radar power comes from a couple sets of diesels with the exuast through the mack???? Just a thought.
philbob, only one stack, is your design CODAG? rafted diesels good for hunting subs
there will never be an EF carrier model nor will the harrier ever be rebuilt,
some of you dont seem to get it, usa is so ahead of the rest
How much coal is left in Wales?

@4845 mt or 300 years worth:)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/jan/12/defence-aircraft-jet-fighters-budget
It’s in the Guardian, so you know it’s true. 😀
I believe the times article from some weeks back quoted only 50 being ordered, so if the guardian is right thats an increase of 20 aircraft!
Have to agree with stan, lovely shots
Where ya gonna put the internal weapons bays? 😉
On the super Harrier? Why does it have to have internal bays:confused:
Now hiding under sofa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
F35b/super harriers
If the uk, italy, spain wanted a Funcked up harrier they could have one. New FRS2 were built for the RN at@ 12 million a unit in @ 2000 as custom build. If users want the F35B its becouse they want the the longer range, heavier payload nice radar, and the fact that the product will be updated. LowRCS is nice but not a huge driver. Fact! all this US peer combat sh@t is BS. Who is going to field a US peer airforce/navy/army in the next lets say 30years?????? Theres no need for a day one super duper air superiority fighter (Bye Bye F22) becouse Taliban airways is just not that good. Slag me of boys but F35B is a nice product that will work nicely as a fighter against real opersition and carrys a nice payload a good range at high speed and can land anywhere. Carrier, frigate, oilers , MARS, landing pad ashore.
In short its a significant improvement over the AV8, worth having.
The F-35B will be STOVL(not VTOL or VSTOL), limiting the amount of hot thrust the deck surface experiences.
According to RR the lift fan generates 20,000lb of thrust, the rollposts upto 1950lb and the engine in 90 degree angle 18000lb thrust.
Intrestingly when the fan spools up the drive shaft transmits 28000 shp (21MW)!
