Updated pics
I’ve updated the Tocumwal website with a few pics of the Pilgrimage. Also added a story about the B24’s lost in the fire that destroyed a hangar in 1945 – in a total fluke the photographer on the pilgrimage managed to take an aerial shot almost in the same place over the remains of the hangar – I’ve included the “then and now” shots in the Gallery
Cheers
I was down there last week and it is looking magnificent, full credit to them for such an incredible ! They are also starting work on an Oxford apparently..these pics were taken in a hurry and only on the iPhone so apologies for the quality

Updates
Thanks to those who have sent material in. There is a great blog entry by Tony Tubbenhauer on his stint as a B-24 instructor at Tocumwal. Also some newly added pictures of the B-24’s formation flying over the airfield.
And remember we are always looking out for any pics, info, whole aircraft etc (yes I know the last bit is a stretch)
Hi Elliot – thanks for that. I should have clarified this better – my fault:rolleyes:
What I am looking for is a list that also has the graphic representation. The part I’m trying to ID has a large A inside the circle with three numbers underneath (they follow the outline of the circle) I will try and pop some pics up when I get back on Sunday.
That list however is a great start, and has already helped me ID some CAC Mustang parts I had
Excellent – thanks for that !
That’s great Bell – you may be familiar with John Hopton’s book “Pots, Pans and Meteors”, aircraft scrapping at Toc 1960-63. If you contacted him, he may allow you to use his images too?
Another of interest to you is John Lever’s “7 OTU Tocumwal”.
Been trying to get a hold of those books – actually, if anyone has the contact details for John Hopton, please PM me – would very much like to get in touch !
Cheers

I’ve just built a simple website (with my zero experience in such things) for the Tocumwal Historic Aerodrome Museum. The gallery is basically all scrapyard pics and also the end results – lots of aluminium bars. They may have already been seen by many but you might like a look. Its a work in progress 😉
I picked up the tail frame of a CAC Wirraway on the weekend from a farm, but I would say there is not much left other than what’s on farms etc. Its been pretty much picked over or sent to scrap – a lot was lost in the last few years of the drought when scrap prices were high, farmers desperate for a few dollars, scrapped what they could 🙁
Still, just happy to have the little bit of frame 🙂
I know I’m 20 years too late with my pursuits but I made the trip to Tocumwal to have a look at “the” dump – it has been totally picked over, the stuff that is there is purely rusted thru, as you can see by the panorama shot I have done, it has water in it, and you also have to contend with grumpy ants, and 6ft snakes – both of which I encountered today (glad I had my shovel handy!)
But for me personally, its great to have been able to backtrack the stuff that came out of the shed to its point of origin. At the very least I can show this to my kids when they are older and they will have a better understanding of how I ended up with all the parts I have…

Must be popular…Spitty ones on haycarts up here..
Maybe its because they kept falling out of the sky around there, hence the nickname “Gippsland Hailstones”
There are still a few floating around in Gippsland, but again, attached to machinery.
For some reason that link won’t work – can you pm me with the full link – everytime I try to open it, half the link vanishes 🙁
Though not strictly speaking a scrapyard, I found this in the backyard of a farmer amid the odd bits and pieces of derelict farm equipment. It’s a Lockheed Hudson aft fuselage, A16-128, with the original USAAF serial showing through the Australian colourscheme. I believe this was rescued for the Tocumwal base museum, but have no idea where it is now.
This part has gone to the AWM – there is a pic of it on their blog
Merry Christmas to you all and a thank you to all who have helped me ( a newcomer) with your knowledge and advice. Enjoy!
Ewan
