What a loss, and what a man, one of the greatest aviators in history without a doubt. I’ll be raising a glass tonight. Blue skies and fair winds, Eric!
Seems to me like this a golden opportunity to re-launch the Bob collection as a slightly leaner collection of aircraft in a much more modern setting, perhaps with a dedicated subsection for the France/Low Countries campaigns which seem a bit forgotten. How about a brand new display with the Ju87, Gladiator, Battle, and Stuka? (you could swap the Blenheim back to the Bomber Hall in its place)
As others have said the Bf110 would look stunning sat menacingly next to the Lancaster. I’d also suggest you relocate the CR42 to a new Desert/Middle East/Med display, get shot of the rather superfluous Jungmeister, and just leave a core collection of the RAF fighters, He11, Ju88 and Bf109. The Hurricane wreck, which is rather tucked away, could be used to stunning effect in the entrance…
.i’m not sure i’d include the P40 ,it well and truly fought above it’s weight.
That’s kind of why I included it. It is much more widely forgotten compared to the P-51, Spitfire etc, yet it fought in every theatre of war right up until the end, performed pretty well all things considered, and achieved a great deal.
The P-40 is an obvious candidate for me. I’d also mention the fighter versions of the Mosquito. OK sure the Mosquito is a rightly famous aircraft but it always seems to be better remembered as the famous unarmed bomber.
I’d love to see the effect of a sideways Tomahawk launch on a small forklift truck. Sounds like a Clarkson-era Top Gear stunt!
Great stuff! I can’t remember, did the Gannet guys manage to sort out the issues with tools? Seem to recall they were being held back somewhere by lack of the right spanners…
Handsome red and white Chipmunk low over the Fens just south of Haddenham, Cambs this morning- looked like it was on finals to a private strip somewhere…
Thanks to everyone who contributed in 2015, hope you had a good New Year and look forward to more Duxford happenings this year!
Genuine Bf109s never seem to stay here, at least not since Black 6…
As I understand it, in future if the traffic on the M11 and A505 stops then the airshow stops. This is as a result of the Shoreham crash and I believe it was implemented at the September show. Perhaps by going all ticket, the relevant authorities will have a handle on the potential traffic and gear up accordingly.
Well, not exactly. The September show (on the Saturday) still went ahead despite the traffic being stationary for nearly the entire duration. There was only one brief pause for 10 minutes or so while the air ambulance arrived to evacuate a casualty from just beyond the NE threshold.
Christmas wishes to you all!
There’s still one DC-4 at North Weald isn’t there?
Isn’t that the only other surviving Meteor FR9 (other than Newark’s)? Nice to see it still alive.
Also, a B-23! That was unexpected!
Great photos, thanks for sharing 🙂
Staying with the Stranraer drift, does that mean that there are parts of three Stranraers extant? I remember a Flypast story covering the underwater recovery of an ex-Queen Charlotte Airlines machine no more than five or ten years ago, and certainly not as long ago as 1986! So that suggests that two wrecks exist in addition to the RAFM machine…
Surprised to see the P-36 still there. I thought it was just over for the 2015 show on loan from its owners in the US?
