Can I add my thanks to DCW for a superb coverage of this fantastic place during 2011, and long may it continue! For those of us who live unfeasibly far away, it’s lovely to be kept up to date with these “virtual visits”.
The re-assembly of the 504 was quick work!
I hadn’t realised the Comet was in for tinkering again, is this just routine?
I’ve always wanted to visit that museum, and the pictures just make that feeling stronger! There are some real treasures there, particulalry the fantastic original WW1 types.
Thanks for posting!
There are several Vulcans and different occasions in the clip, it’s quite mish-mash!
At 0:01,the aerial shot of the static park appears to show second prototype VX777 with the revised wing shape (note black tip to tail and Vickers Vanguard to the port side, 0:01),
But the ground shot at 0:03 shows a prototype with an all-white tail in a different static arrangement (Comet to port), this is probably 1st prototype VX770.
0:05 is definitely VX770 (no bomb-aimer’s blister) with the original wing, in yet another different static display (Valiant B.2 to port!).
Shots at 0:12 and 0:15 are VX770 again, and the same occasion as 0:05.
0:23 is also VX770, being prepared for flight.
The take-off shot at 0:30 is a production B.2, presumably shot several years later.
The actual barrel roll is being performed by a silver pure delta Vulcan with black tail tip. As far as I know neither prototype was ever painted silver, so the suggestion that it was one of the early production B1s (XA890) before the introduction of the kinked B.1 wing must be right…
and Barbara Hepworth sculptures…
Good to see you’re armed and ready to fight the snowfall!
To my untrained eye, the port wing has progressed with reskinning and the starboard wing is further dismantled. The fuselage remains in waiting. There were no engineers around during my quick visit, they may have been allowed a rare day off.
Thanks. Looking good, although I suspect it’ll be a while before we see AR501 up in the skies again!
That 504 looks superb. How was the Spitfire coming along?
My congratulations to you! Just nickname him “Shar”…
I still can’t get over the fact that it was never made into Bristol Airport over Lulsgate, a hilltop site whose expansion is limited by topography, is prone to fog, is much further from the centre of the city, and is nowhere near a rail link or motorway junction (all of which Filton is better for)
I suppose that kills the dream of an integrated Bristol aircraft collection based around Concorde, the Britannia at Kemble, plus the Bolingbroke and other Bristol Aero Collection exhibits currently at Kemble.
Maybe Vulcan, given the role of Garvie Island as a bombing range post-war?
Lovely stuff. The FIAT looks ace!
That looks superb. I had my doubts when I heard that the Squadron were back-converting the F.6 to an F.3, but the end result more than justifies it!
Duxford Friday December 2nd:
I notice this thread has passed 200,000 hits. Thanks to all for your interest.
My interest is ongoing, it’s really fantastic to be able to keep up with events at DX for someone who can’t get there much more than once a year. Bravo, and thanks for all your hard work photographing and posting. It’s very much appreciated!
Some really sumptuous photos of a mouth-watering aircraft, my favourite is the head-on diving shot with the puff of engine smoke. Bravo, D.C.W.! I can’t wait to see P9374 in the flesh; fingers crossed for Legends 2012…
