Yes, meanwhile, if you see enough Chinese aviation publishings, they usually rate Mig21/Mig23 as the same generation fighters.

that’s because China missed a generation there with Mig-23/F-4

So how are you going to place J-8, a generation higher or lower than F4/Mig23?

At least Chinese aviation industries consider F-22/F35 as 4th gen fighter but F-16/Su-27 as 3rd generation. Well, just different industries take the different standards. So, if any Chinese official publishing say the 4th generation fighter, it refers to F-22 grade.

Anyway, Showtime100, except US, Russian only say they will fly their 5th gen fighter in 2009 and no news about European’s equivalent, at least China is the 3rd country in the world that formerly declared it’s developing 4th gen fighter (western standard). Still no bad, isn’t it.

J-10 takes many yrs to develop means China next generation will also be equally longtime to develop…???

PRC 10yrs ago is not even 10th largest economy,so 10yrs later it shall also be in the same position? Who is the 4th largest economy now?

Do u know what is called ” Progress” ?

J-10 took the maiden flight in 1998 but only certificated in 2003.

J-xx say taking the flight earliest in 2013, it will only reach IOC before 2018, i think the fastest?

You won’t deploy your prototype in the most popular tourist destination so J-10 is in the procession of declassification. Only when PLAAF got something better by a margin of 1 generation under development, it will declassify their passed top secret stuff like J10 & WS-10.

IMO, the most straightforward and reliable way to track Chinese J-XX’s progress is to track the development of Chinese turbofan engines designed to power the fighter.

Because AVICI’s open source has already declared they won’t compromise their next generation fighter or J-xx by using any legacy 3rd gen powerplant but 4th gen engine like WS-15. And I believe the development of such a powerplant is the hardest part for AVICI to conquer.

Remember the J-11B prototype is also served as high altitude testbed for WS-10A turbofan? My guess is this time around, AVICI will play the same by utilizing the twin engine powered J-XX prototype as the high altitude testbed for WS-15.

With the confirmed designation of WS-15, AVICI has probably finalized the design of the T/W 10 grade core engine and moved into next stage of model development. If so, the rules of 5 years model, 5 years certification applies, then the WS-15 could be certificated in 2015 or 2016 if everything goes smoothly. Of course high altitude test should be carried out well before the WS-15 certification, which means the J-XX 4th fighter prototype could probably take the maiden flight before 2015!

I doubt the PLAAF would appreciate me roaming the countryside taking pictures of “secret” aircraft 😀

I’m not saying the J-10 isn’t being inducted, I’m not one of the people naiive enough to think there are still only a few prototypes flying. Hell you can see a number of them in Google Earth at various locations now. My only point is that as soon as that image appeared, I thought of this one right off:

Don’t worry, compared to Arthur who could find himself hard to blend into the remote Chinese countryside background, you could easily blend yourself into the crowded tourist group while looking out into the sky for clues of J10.

The picture does wantto convey the message now J10 is in Guilin which to the happiness of the fans, now they can enjoy the holiday while have a close look at fighter. No need repeat Arthur’s experience of roaming the country road in a shaky bike or Skoda n order to access remote Chinese airfields.
    :p

I dunno man, that looks like one of the popular J-10B images shrunk and superimposed over a scenic image.

Then, Sean, you’re suggested to pack & go to see them personally in the coming season! Anyway, Guilin is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China, to spot J10 there is pretty easy, considering Arthur paid a similar visit to Chengdu 1 or 2 years ago to view J10. Now, with J10 spreads out all over China, view them is much easier than before 😀

J10 now spotted in the scenic Guilin city, indicating PLAAF 2nd division started to receive J10 fighter jets

Well, with the inputs from Maya & Tphuang, I could re-phase some of my little chart as well as enrich it a bit.

Chinese Turbofan engines developed ( Including terminated and frozen) or under development:

-1. WS-6 by AVICI Liming, 1st attempt in 1980s by Chinese to tackle the turbofan engine, but failed due to the unrealistic goal and weak aviation and related industries then

    0. WS-9 By AVICI XAC, licensed copy of RR spey, entered service with JH-7 & JH-7A

    1. WS-10 by AVIC1 Liming: for J10/J11 3rd generation fighters and future airlifters. Certificated in Nov,2005, entered small scale initial production in 2006, expected to mass production in later 06 or 2007.

    2. WS-11 by AVICII: for trainers like AVICII’s JL-8 ( K-8)

    3. WS-12 by AVICI: in 1990s, Chinese started “Middle Thrust” turbofan engine project, the developed engine model under this scheme is called WS-12, however, due to the limited resources, in 1999, the WS-12 project is frozen to give priority to the Ws-10A project which runs parallelly. However, in view of the soon will be service WS-13 the WS-12 developed under “ middle thrust T/W 8 project” is unlikely to be activated again.

    4. WS-13 by AVICI Liyang: based substantially on the core engine developed under the “ middle thrust T/W 8 project”, however, low pressure parts of the engine could combined a lot of RD-33 mature technologies and even components in order to fasten the development, expected to be certificated in the end of 2007 and enter service in 2008.

    5. WS-14 by AVICI or II?: ?

    6. WS-15 by AVICI: T/W 10 grade big thrust Turbofan engine could be
based on the GD35 core ?developed under the CJ2000 Chinese 4ht Gen high T/W Turbofan engine scheme. Officially designated as WS-15, is targeted to equip Chinese 4th Generation J-XX fighter which is under developments.

    7. WS500 by AVICI: for UAV and missiles
