PL-11 42G, where did you get that? As far as the PL-12 vs. SD-10 goes, the missiles that were shown with the J-10 photos does not appear to be bigger, longer, or wider than the SD-10 mockups shown with the FC-1 mockups. I don’t know about the seeker.
Well most sources ( also in Chinese) put PL-11’s maximum g at least 40, I think it’s good enough to show it’s better than the SD-10’s 38G 😉
Even the PL-12 is bigger, the size different is very slight and more importantly, the shape of both AAMs will be the same in order to share the same aerodynamic features developed by Luoyang, on the other hand, only if one can put SD-10 & PL-12 side by side in the same photo, then can tell it’s the same size or not, but I’m afraid just compare 2 same shape AAMs in different angle and distance pictures really can’t tell too much about the slight difference of the diameter.
In the open source we know SD-10 is available for export as early as 2002 ( When the 1st picture was shown in exhibitions), of course it’s certificated then otherwise how to export. but PL-12 is only certificated in the end of 2004 and its picture started to appeared in 2005. that shows the 2 missile is indeed different, apparently, SD-10 is not up to the requirement of PLAAF in 2002 and PL-12 still underwent further development.
Inside the 052C ,quite neat. Photo from Xinhua news agency, also reported in text is the 052C task force has joint exercise with PLAN Aviation, Submarine force & amphibious force with the Linked different platforms
One thing is for sure nobody is going to complain his AAM can withstand too much of overload, You got smaller draggy canards in the front is intended to allow your missile travel faster rather than you can compromise the G load. That’s why we see AIM-120, aerodynamically more similar to PL-12 than R77, has a massive 50G overload, the PL-11( Aspider) is 42g, and SD-10 is 38g, and I doubt PLAAF will accept anything lower than what they already has
PL-12 got bigger diameter than SD-10, bigger antenna as a consequence and more powerful seeker, better and more Propellant to give better thrust and range and of course heavier.
And you do have evidence except that single drawing that they would make 6 cell modules??? Drawings aren’t a real proof and we haven’t seen anything from testing either, so we will just have to wait and see, a 8 or 4 cell module isn’t a proof of having something different from Shtil up till now, nor is a 6 cell module proof of really having Shtil.
….
32 cell Shtil-1 VLS is simply too big for 3000 DWT 054A’s B position , X4 or X8 format all wouldn’t work in that narrow position, Russian’s own FFG under development currently (Wouldn’t enter service till 2009?) with such 32/36 module Shtil-1 VLS is around 4500 tons.
But the difference is that the F2 is officially dead but J10 is undergone upgrading currently, by next year, its new version will be out, but of course all the events will be kept as “ never happen” till a few years later, suddenly we see a blur photo on the net. Then, everybody start saying” PSed”, only eventually find out it’s true.
That’s the pattern how we get to know J10. 😀
Hey, it’s unfair to compare a fighter entered service a dozen years earlier than J10, even, J10 wins there’s nothing too much cheerful IMHO.
No J-10 in Zhuhai air show this time because of strong opposition from PLAAF even though CAC is keen to market its top of the line product
Some nice pictures of PLAN’s South sea fleet

Yeah I like to see those covers removed. Remember the 051Cs also had me confused for a while because they had somethings that were covered and suggestively from a distance they looked like Orekhs, but when the covers were removed, they were not.
On the model, they look like Orekhs to me though, and Almaz has gone on the record trying to make a big sale of the VLS Shtil-1 to China, so my instincts to tell me it should be VLS Shtil-1.
Well, if the Russian Shtil-1 VLS ready,, we would have already seen them on the latest Sovremenny-class Destroyers delivered to China, No point China ordered so expensive and important vessels without more proper air defense system to defend them but could find such VLS Shtil-1 on less important and cheaper 054A FFG. If there were news to confirm Shtil-1 VLS is ready but only awaiting a customer, then we must see them on Sovremenny-class Destroyers delivered to PLAN, otherwise, the ASSUMPTION that Shtil-1 VLS on less important 054A doesn’t stand. No reason DDGs don’t have but FFGs have.
Secondly, we never see HQ-16 doesn’t mean it does not exist, we also never see HHQ-9 which is carried by 052C but nowadays even Pentagon never deny its existence. There are just no single clue in Chinese internet based military communities suggesting Shtil-1 VLS being used on 054A FFG, so does the usually big mouthed Russian media. Even Kanwa, usually track the Chinese military developments via the Russian weapon export to China, denied there’re any Russian export of Shtil-1 VLS to China, do check the website of Kanwa, this Jane’s report also written by Pinkov, the Chief editor of Kanwa.
There’re Chinese source suggests HQ-16 was test fired and subsequently certificated at the end of 2004, the delay of the HQ-16 already seriously delay the launching of 054A FFG although PLAN in such a great need of decent air-defense surface vessels. The procedure taking 2 years just reveal PLAN is impossible take a immature Russian system according to many sources still under final testing into its own frigate.
So, we can be pretty much assured the 32-unit VLS is not Shtil-1 but Chinese own system
Four Hulls is news to me, we only have photographic evidence for 2 but I would not find four surprising given the current pace of PLAN shipbuilding. From my own suppositions the 054A weapons and systems fit will be largely if not entirely china produced but that the systems used will have strong Russian influence and lineage. For instance HQ-16 is said to be a result of co-development of a stil variant between China and Russia.
…
We already saw 1 054A launched into water and another hull inside the Huangpu shipyard’s covered area. We also spotted another 1 054A being constructed in Shanghai Hudong shipyard as the above pictures show, in the Hudong subcontractor’s website, we found information that they are contracted to supply equipments for 2 054A being built in Hudong, so, we already saw 3 substantial 054A, and 1 in credible source.
The systems no matter how much Russian influences they carry, they are still Chinese made and have the IP right. Russians know that. Russians like to sell their stuff in pairs which means their sell Radar then they must also sell missiles. If the missile & weapon system are Chinese, so do the sensors to control them.
At least till now, the launched 054A is still quite close to the model we already saw long time ago.
😉
Report to Congress, The Northrop Grumman must have secretly transferred global hawk UAC to AVIC1 Chengdu Aircraft Company!! :p 😮 😉
Another 054A is being built in shanghai Hudong shipyard. Expected to be launched by year end.
The “Top plate” alike search radar on 054A is call “sea eagle” 3D S/C band radar, apparently with strong Russian influence.
The main air defense system (ADS) is 32 unit VLS HQ-16 SAMs, aerodynamically different from Russian SA-N-12 which is currently used in PLAN 052B , the Russian VLS Shtil-1 system is still under developed according to Kanwa, so it’s not used for 054A, the HQ-16 can engage 4 different air targets simultaneously. unsure there’s any anti-submarine missiles presented or not,
