RE: New Newark Name
But it’s in Jersey… surely ‘The Garden Airport’ would be more appropriate than confusing people by naming it after NY State… 😉
RE: Swiss airline reportedly agrees with British Airways on alliance
No… my understanding was that BA didn’t fancy Swiss, as their networks were to similar, and they didn’t want another ‘large’ European airline talking AA/CX/QF transfer pax off them within Europe.
But it’s logical when you think about it: LX already codeshare with BA on LHR-BSL, Finnair on GVA/ZRH/BRN-BSL-Helsinki, EI on ZRH-DUB and GVA/BSL-LCY-DUB, AA on BSL-BRU/ZRH and from connecting flights from AA’s gateways in the US, QF on SIN-Oz flights etc etc.
All I can say is… about bloody time. Now… can I merge my Qualiflyer miles with my Executive club miles… (I fear not 🙁 )
RE: Pic of the day… Saab 2000
This is the only Saab 2000 I’ve been on.
BSL-BRU, two years ago.
Again, mainly white, but it is a special c/s…

In Spain, it makes more sense to let the train take the strain for domestic journeys…

Is it Craggy Island?
RE: Eastern Airlines
they went bust, I believe.
RE: Isle of Man / IOM
A year ago, I flew a Swissair flight from BSL to ZRH, a distance of 110km, also about a 15 minute flight.
Obviously, it was mainly for transfer pax, but SR used an LX (Crossair, pre Swiss) Avro RJ100 with LX crew.
There were about 30-40 pax on board and no less than 3 members of cabin crew who just had time to distribute the usual LX choclates and sweets in the air.
Is it any wonder Swissair went bust?
RE: Airline colour schemes
gd, I don’t give a flying monkey’s about the union flag… In fact, I’m more of a Scottish nationalist…
However, some of them looked extremly tacky, and to me, the corporate identity is what I see on the tail plane, which can sometimes be the only distinguishing thing that can be seen from a distance (especially with all the white fuselages going about). And while I didn’t have a problem with some of the world images, I’d rather see a standard one. And, to be perfectly honest, the first time I saw a BA plane with the Chatham Dockyard tail taking off (it was an A320 BSL-LHR on the lunch time flight, in Autumn 99, I was just returning to the office at the time) I saluted it.
It is so much smarter than most of the other world schemes.
RE: Embraer Orders.
I think I heard LH Cityline were revalauting their order for Dornier RJ’s due to Dornier’s lack of funds… they may soon change their order to ERJ’s.
RE: Airline colour schemes
I’d have to say BA didn’t do any market research before introducing the World schemes… *yuck*
RE: PTV’s on narrow-bodies
as mentioned, BA’s A319’s and new A320’s have the drop down screens, but I’ve only flown on one of the newer ones so far.
Swissair’s A319/320/321 fleet also had the drop down screens, and after the saftey demonstraion, they showed nature films for the majority of the flight (plus the usual map and height/speed info near departure/arrival locations). However, there were no headphone jacks, so the films were visual only.
Presumably Swiss use the same screens, but I haven’t flown an Airbus with them yet, so can’t comment about their IFE.
RE: Help Wanted Please
Andy, Swiss use Crossair’s LX/CRX, not Swissair’s SR/SWR.
RE: Toilet waste disposel in mid-flight
yes, 29 mins certainly won’t have been enough time to dump fuel.
So, to answer your question, I’ve checked the Boeing website, and am using this page (for cross reference purposes) http://www.boeing.com/assocproducts/aircompat/7474sec2.pdf (page 5 covers RB211’s).
Now, I have no idea how much fuel the BA 744 would have been carrying to fly to SIN, so maybe one of our resident pilots could hazard a guess at that? I also don’t know which config BA use, so I’ll take the mean of the figures.
The operating Empty weight (without fuel, pax, cargo) is 396’284lbs (179’753 kg)
The Fuel Capacity is either 204’333 or 216’824 litres (360’226lbs/163’368kg or 382’336lbs/173’395kg respectively)
The Maximum take off weight is between 800’000 and 875’000lbs (364’234-397’800kg)
The Maximum Landing weight is either 574’000 or 630’000lbs (230’361 or 285’763kg)
Actually, I can’t do anything else with these figures, as I don’t know the payload on this flight, or the fuel loaded.
Suffice to say, assuming for an aprox 7 hr flight, it would have had about a 40% fuel load, about 140’000lbs of fuel
That still allows for 34’000lbs payload, plus what fuel was used in the 20 minute flight.
Or am I just confusing myself? hey, it’s late, and I ain’t done mental arithmetic in ages. Anyone care to comment?

I’m surprised you could drive from Cork to Farnborough in 6 and a half hours, never mind an hour and a half…
I mean, the ferry alone would take about 4 hours.
