The lifting device is a Herkules, the smallest of three different sizes, the tubular items are from a Portalkran.
The rear canopy mods made for the film were removed in around 2010, and replaced with the original MG81Z turret, the 37mm underwing cannons are apparently in store at what was RAF Stafford, now MOD Stafford. Phil Merton has sold his project to another collector in Germany, hence the lack of a website, which is a pity because there were some very good photos on it, especially the field full of Jumo engines. Kent B of B Museum
I visited the museum many years ago and was very disappointed to find out I couldn’t take photos, after all that was the main reason I went. I think their attitude is disgusting, maybe we should launch a petition to boycott the place, and see what happens when their entrance receipts fall away and they are faced with closure, well, that’s it, I’m probably banned now. :diablo:
Red 7 & Duxford
When I was in Germany, I asked one of the team if RED 7 would appear at Duxford, I was told that the team had approached Duxford in the past and was only offered the same amount of money to appear as a UK based aircraft. Consequently as we all know, she never came to the UK.
RED 7
I had the pleasure of spending a few days at RED 7’s home base in October/November, she looks absolutely fantastic in the flesh. The team have worked miracles with the restoration, they did engine runs on 31st October, unfortunately I missed them due to being in Austria buying the damaged engine cowlings from Red 7.
The team made me very welcome, they are a nice bunch.
Manchester
Yes, there is one, it was seen in the late 70’s and the way it was described to me, it was definately a Manchester, it’s not in the UK. It would, I believe be a good candidate for a recovery, if the will and funds exist, I did mention it to a large Uk museum, no interest there, though.
Driffield’s Hangers
Hello Phil,I was stationed at Leconfield and Driffield in April 1980 whilst doing my driver training with the Army.I was disgusted to see the runways and peri track being ripped up to make way for a cross country driving course,I did however make sure I looked at as much of the station as I could whilst there.
One night on guard duty I remember walking by the control tower on a moonlit night and looking out over the airfield and thinking that many young men probably left the airfield on just such a night many years ago, quite eary really.
The hangers and as much as possible of the rest of the station should be preserved as a permament memorial to all that were based there and never returned,Mike.
